In the authoring tool world: PowerPoint focused authoring tool, Basically you know PPT, love it and want the ability to build within it and then convert your PPT to a Course. You have objects, elements, layers (in many cases) along with an option to go tree or not, with some allowing the “slide” like view too; you can also create a course with PPT slides only, but that is not the ideal target.

Some people might convert their PPT to a video (it can be done) OR they have that production facility and shoot their own high quality videos OR they purchase 3rd party content video courses. SCORM 2004 3rd edition, SCORM 2004 4th edition (rarely used), AICC, PENS – all of which are compliance standards, each with strengths and minuses. . As you are aware I am not a fan of AICC – useful in early 2000’s, but IMO not that useful today.

PowerPoint still reigns – If you are a course purist, the idea that PPT should be seen as an authoring tool should make you grumble with disgust. . Yes, you can use it for many different things, and yes, Microsoft has an add-on that turns PPT into something similar to Adobe Presenter. At least SCORM support – Plenty still support AICC. Only a few support PENS, which is a shame, because it really does some very cool things.

Innovation abounded and the push to focus on the “PPT to Flash&# angle continued to shine. Also SCORM 1.2 & AICC. Import and convert PPT to the web, add rich media. Same thing with PENS i.e. a SCORM LMS that does not support PENS will not work with a PENS content authoring tool. The end of the year is here, okay in just a few short weeks, but for those on vacation, the festivities have already began.
