SCORM 2004 3rd edition, SCORM 2004 4th edition (rarely used), AICC, PENS – all of which are compliance standards, each with strengths and minuses. . As you are aware I am not a fan of AICC – useful in early 2000’s, but IMO not that useful today. Then there is Tin Can aka xAPI.

All of the well-known authoring tools export course content to eLearning standards like SCORM , Tin Can API , and AICC. Other issues can be generated by the dependence of SCORM and xAPI course content on Flash technology, which might not be supported by every browser. How can you tell if a vendor is an expert?

Course standards are course standards, and yes, you have the option to select CMI-5 and xAPI. What I am finding is that AICC is nearly gone in the LEP space (as it is with LMSs too), so if I was you, I’d seek SCORM, SCORM 1.2, xAPI as my top three.

At least SCORM support – Plenty still support AICC. Only a few support PENS, which is a shame, because it really does some very cool things. xAPI support – Hit the gas this is flying fast. How about adding an xAPI checker or something along those lines? Output to HTML5. 2004 (3rd edition) included.

If you are seeking PENS, LMS. AICC – slightly LMS – personally AICC should be on the next satellite to go into space never to be seen again, but that’s just me. xAPI – It’s LMS, but it is razor close. That said, it is a tie. 2004 – tie.

In 2005, PENS was launched by AICC but did not initially gain wide acceptance. In the past year, I have seen a wider number of vendors including the PENS course standard, which in my opinion, enables anyone who builds courses, a streamlined and fast process for publishing into a LMS/learning platform. A robust system that contains everything from a perfect score in my learning environment functionaliy to administration (also a perfect score) to content curation, video management (with auto detection FPS) to the ability to accept course standards including xAPI and PENS. Course standard support is only xAPI (thus no SCORM, etc.).
