Tony Karrer

(via Stephen Downes ) Impact of Open Source Software on Education, Series Launch is interesting both because of the publishing model and because of the content. What they've done is recruit authors who are going to publish (via a blog) something between a blog post, interview and an article every other week on a particular topic - in this case Open Source. Each post will have comments, questions, etc.

The big question: choosing tools

Clive on Learning

The Learning Circuits Blog Big Question for July is 'how should e-learning developers choose their authoring tools given the proliferation of tools on the market?' Nevertheless, I believe I should address the Big Question in a more measured way than in last week's rant, so here goes. The answer to the question, of course, is that it depends on what you are trying to create. For an open source alternative, try EXE.

Business of Learning

Tony Karrer

In the past few weeks, I've had some really eye-opening conversations about the state of Learning as a Business. Particularly, I'm interested in the question of: While training as a publisher of courses and courseware faces an increasingly challenging market, what other things can learning businesses successfully sell to internal or external customers? That's a big ouch. Every corporation worth its salt opened a training department. This is a very strange time.

Ive been struggling a lot lately with the "body of knowledge" mindset, the notion that theres a Big Bag o Facts that people have to master (as opposed to learning that they have to engage in). As a practical alternative, I think the Audio Off button is a great idea -- which of course means that the audio cant ever carry the main message.
