Today, the very definition of organizations has changed. The impact of digitization is going far beyond a few collaboration tools and platforms. Today’s organizations are no longer defined by fixed workplaces, nine-to-five working hours or even a set of homogeneous employees. Operational and business models have been turned on their heads with the advent of enterprises like Uber , Airbnb , Etsy and Amazon. It requires a complete re-imagining of how business gets done.

While the site shows 4,000 members, I would guess that truly active membership -- lots of posting, interaction, some argument -- is in the range of 50-100. Debates have been long and often spirited, and while I have not always found it all useful (too much parsing of semantics, too many side visits to politics last fall) it did keep me informed about current interests in the training field and what practitioners were really working on (as opposed to what the media often report).

My professional life is pretty hectic much of the time, and I needed a space to write down my ideas and record my thoughts before I forgot them. I could have simply used a paper based diary, but I decided when I first heard of blogging that it might fulfil the role of an e-diary for me.

Most of our learning is achieved within social contexts. I can't recall many examples where I have learnt something significant without the presence of others. From language acquisition, to basic numeracy and literacy skills, to more sophisticated activities such as public speaking, dining out with old friends or driving in traffic - all have been scaffolded and coached through the influence of others. Humans are inherently social. We want to be accepted by others.

They need to be aware that there are alternative perspectives and they need to be able to defend a position from attack. Too much bad theory has crept into the classroom in recent years, as I have previously commented , and we want to ensure that our trainee teachers are aware of flaws, counter-arguments and alternatives to all theories. Academics don't (and can't) always agree on everything, so why not model critical discussion for the benefit of the students?

Reflections from May trip to Italy, UK, and Netherlands

Two days of the trip were paid work: One day I keynoted the Learning Innovations and Quality Conference and participated in the launch of the International Council for Open Research and Education ( ICORE ) in Rome. I spent most of my time hanging out with five of the savviest people I know, on their home ground. When I started the trip, I planned to interview each of them in depth about today’s complex, dizzying world and make a book out of it.

Most CLOs I talk with are so busy taking care of today’s business that they spend little time preparing for the future. Short-term thinking is good for responding to incremental change, but deciding things one step at a time doesn’t prepare you to thrive in a world of systemic, wholesale change. Examining scenarios — stories about alternative futures — makes the future imaginable and potentially real. Rather, they provide alternative views of the future.
