In large organisations, there may be a platform available and you may have to decide whether you want to use this, or an alternative. The shortlist that I currently have for tools that are relatively easy to implement are Elgg, Moodle, Ning, Drupal, Bloom Fire, Buddy Press for wordpress, and Social Engine. Other platforms such as Drupal need more support and expertise. Maybe you want the platform to be hosted on your own server or not.
