The personal web

Learning with 'e's

With the Southampton PLE Conference #PLE_SOU at full throttle, I thought it would be a good time to reiterate my views on the personal web. Sound like a PLE? My view is that PWTs sit inside a PLE but they are not the whole story. I attempted to map these components out in a post entitled Anatomy of a PLE. For those who don't, the institutional VLE (or sadly, no web based use at all) is an alternative. VLE PLE education learning #ple_sou personal web

Online courses must die!

E-Learning Provocateur

So what’s the alternative? Occupying a place on the continuum somewhere between a VLE and a PLE, an ILE is an informal learning environment that a facilitator manages on behalf of a group of learners. Unlike a PLE, an ILE is communal. A touch dramatic, isn’t it? Now that I have your attention, please bear with me. There’s method in my madness… The myth of rapid authoring.

But we comply with them, because there is no alternative. One of my tasks as an academic working in the field of teacher education over the last few years, has been to develop and promote this kind of alternative, off the rails education. Now and then I deviate into some alternative practices, which have been documented on this blog and elsewhere. content education learning metaphor network personal learning PLE railway Technology

Doing so of course, they fall into exactly the same trap, because the alternative names - such as 'social web' and 'read/write web' - only tend to create certain expectations around those tools which may be unrealistic, and can also limit our imagination too. At the VLE is Dead symposium , there was an issue over the term PLE (Personal Learning Environment). or the PLE and rename will be a little more difficult, I predict.

Tool Set 2009

Tony Karrer

I'm hoping to address questions such as: How do you create a personal tool set or Personal Learning Environment (PLE) for yourself? For example, Personal Learning , PLE , PWLE , PKM are all pretty closely related. But when I go to PLE and then look at the related Tools, I'm not seeing clear winners. I'm not sure if the tool set or methods would be different having used that list of skills, but it's important to consider alternative frameworks.

Graham Attwell will probably talk the most sense, providing a real alternative - the PLE. Tags: VLE PLE Wolverhampton ALT-C 2009 VLE is dead #VLEundead The ALT-C 'VLE is dead' symposium attracted a huge audience. It was like the Black Hole of Calcutta in that room, as anyone who was there will tell you. Each of our panel of four presented our cases, some arguing for and some against the demise of the VLE. Funeral notices were issued during the Conference.

Jay Cross's Informal Learning

More information on the course: In the last five years, the twin concepts of the personal learning environment (PLE) and personal learning network (PLN) have been offered as alternatives to more traditional environments such as the learning management system (LMS) and institutionally-based courses. In mid-September, I plan to participate in this production from Stephen Downes, George Siemens, and Dave Cournier.

Why and how to create successful Personal Learning Networks (PLNs) in the Workplace

TalentLMS

By virtue of this definition, PLNs are an extension to a professional’s personal learning environment (PLE). If employees are to reap the benefits from socializing and meeting often, a non-disruptive alternative has to be found. Because of the three constraints to continuous learning in the workplace discussed above (Cost, Timing, Disruption), PLNs have become the most viable alternative to formal corporate learning.

I’m not buying the PLE, but as noted above, “Adaptive Learning” is going more along those lines, which again, to me, it is not the same. . I love that you add HTML5 sims, but the whole Flash usage especially when the system offers nice m-learning capabilities (including on/off synch for assignments), is baffling – uh, iOS doesn’t play well with Flash (you can use alternative browsers in the iTunes store).
