In 2009, given the economic downturn, the group’s management began to experiment with alternatives to costly and time-consuming live meetings. Sodexo’s learning team sought feedback and made some changes and enhancements for 2010, laying the groundwork for more learning and its virtual learning environment (VLE).

So what’s the alternative? Occupying a place on the continuum somewhere between a VLE and a PLE, an ILE is an informal learning environment that a facilitator manages on behalf of a group of learners. Unlike a VLE, an ILE is strictly informal. Frankly, there’s nothing most online courses do that a PDF can’t.
