An API (Application Program Interface) enables an interface from a piece of software to communicate with another piece of software (in its simplest form) or multiple pieces of software (called a mashup). Just some thoughts that puzzle me on why some LMS/LCMS vendors (okay over 98% of them) are still in some time warp from the Eighties when it comes time to enhance their services and technological solutions. Unfortunately, we do not have that luxury when buying YOUR LMS/LCMS. No follow-up, zip. I know its a novel idea.

More of a course management system, than a LCMS/LMS as they try to push it. APIs and mashups – which is really can expand Moodle to the next level of learning. The biggest challenge you will face with Moodle, and in many cases with open source LMS/LCMS solutions is that you need to have strong technical skills.

If you as the customer want to create your own API/Mashup or find one on the net and want to integrate it into your paid LMS, the vendor will charge you. As I have said before, mobile learning and tablets is going to end up being the biggest thing in the last 10 years in the e-learning industry. This will be part of the article.
