If the assessment and lessons are separate SCOs, then (depending upon the LMS) the student may need to complete all SCOs before the course can be marked as complete. I think having a lesson level pre-assessment may be the better approach and easier to implement in an LMS. Like you said, having a separate assessment for each lesson makes sure that students don’t just know four out of the five key concepts.
