Cammy Beans Learning Visions: DIY vs. Formal Learning

Learning Visions

Tuesday, February 27, 2007 DIY vs. Formal Learning DIY Learning (Do-it-Yourself) is the term of the week, it seems. Elliot Masies most recent Learning Trends newsletter leads with the headline "DIY: Do It Yourself Trends". He quotes an article by Dion Hinchcliffe in ZD Net in which Dion states, The idea of DIY (Do It Yourself) is to get developers and IT departments out of the demand loop and letting users self-service themselves. What do you think?

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Second Life Backlash and Controversy

Learning Visions

And Im not implying that Im a Second Life naysayer. As you may know, Ive only been there once. Donald does a great job recapping various articles and provides some useful links, including the following: 2) Second Thoughts on Second Life by Sylvia Martinez. Christopher Simpson also comments: As for doing business, holding meetings and such in SL, its really a matter of what works and what doesnt. But perhaps we can do some of the key things (e.g.,

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: All The Worlds A-Twitter

Learning Visions

After reading Jane Harts article Understanding Todays Learner , I realized Id better be walking the talk and trying out all the hot new "learning" tools. That sort of freaked me out and I momentarily panicked -- how do I reply back and just how did they find me so fast? (oh, Not a bad start-up time, if I do say so myself. Like Tracy Hamilton , Im enjoying the endless thought streams. I know that Karyn Romeis has a cold. Ill let you know what I decide.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Debunking the Learning Styles Myth

Learning Visions

Wednesday, May 16, 2007 Debunking the Learning Styles Myth As you may know, Ive been on a focused mission to better understand so-called learning styles and their place -- or not -- in e-Learning. Guy includes the text of a 2001 article by Sigmund Tobias of Fordham University. There are generally many ah-ha moments as people understand the why of the rationale folks do things so differently from the way they do. Im coming at it more from the e-Learning perspective.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Half of Companies Blocking Facebook

Learning Visions

This August 21 article posted by Sharon Gaudin in Information Week reports that Half of Companies are Blocking Facebook: "Employers are increasingly blocking access to Facebook because theyre concerned about the time wasted and the information leaked when workers use social networks on company time." Im no Facebook super-user and I havent experienced a huge time suck from it, but I suppose its possible. Of course, no company can do so, but many of them still try.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Audio in eLearning: When Rough Around the Edges is Better

Learning Visions

Tuesday, June 09, 2009 Audio in eLearning: When Rough Around the Edges is Better At our seminar today on using Articulate and Moodle and "Doing More for Less" , the conversation turned (as it always does) to using audio in eLearning. Im not sure if the SME was reading a script, reading the notes, or just speaking from the heart. This past year we started doing more video interviews with SMEs using Flip cameras over the XL1. The eLearning Salary Gender Gap Phew!

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: The Value of Instructional Designers

Learning Visions

I come from an old-school approach: I sort of understand the technology, but I leave the graphics and programming expertise to others. The programming skills should be left to the programmers. This article focused more on what instructional designers should not be (lone gunmen).

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Essential Reading for Instructional Design?

Learning Visions

Im not looking for the obtuse theory books. Im already feeling a bit overwhelmed. Im about halfway through Michael Allens new book, Designing Successful E-Learning. Between you and John Im going to need to ask for a visit to Ikea for a new bookshelf too!

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: My Top Ten Tools for 2009

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Theory vs. Application in Instructional Design: One Academics View

Learning Visions

Im still a really hands-on person. Or maybe Im just too lazy and poor. Now, Im not linking to John just because he is full of praise of me (which is nice and somewhat embarrassing, I must admit.), John asks, "So does it matter if Cammy knows (and I have no idea if she does) what the Dick/Carey , Smith/Ragan, or Morrison/Ross/Kemp models are? Does she need to know those?" Do you think it matters? Do I use ADDIE? Im with you, Maria!

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: College Women on Gamers: They Giggle

Learning Visions

That said, Im a little concerned that the gamer mentality is sometimes presented as important to corporate culture and that as a result women should get into gaming. Im a bit of an über a-hole when it comes to stereotypical representations - the giggly "girl" (which is the name of this episode) just lights my match. I play geography games, but Im not a gamer. But then Im feeling stubborn today. This is a game console -- but is doing yoga on the Wii a "game"?

Our tools still require the user to work in the Flash environment, but you really dont need to know Flash. The project management stuff from the session was really basic, but the main point I took away was embedded into the program about 40 minutes in.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: A Deserted Second Life

Learning Visions

Well, I do know that some educators are experimenting thoughtfully with Second Life ( Karl Kapp , for one). And I also know that theres a lot of hype and a lot of people who havent bought into the whole notion of even having a second life. Do you have a Second Life?

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Learning Styles

Learning Visions

I found some great articles/old posts on learning styles, thanks to Cathy Moore who pointed me to her reading list. Theories do not help us to expand our awareness and understanding of learning; they serve to reduce and confine it. I can see how theorists might argue that reading text aloud to the learner addresses multiple "learning styles," but the real-world experience is one of frustration: you want to read ahead but you cant because the narrator reads more slowly than you do.

Im not sure how this relates to danah boyds recent blog article on Viewing American class divisions through FaceBook and MySpace. I had read Danahs article before starting my interviews and was listening for any judgment based on class. Im a major geek, yet I avoid Second Life and continue to be skeptical about its use in elearning. Two results were for articles about the percentage of women in SL.
