For many years, Moodle has been most people’s port of call when looking for an open source LMS (or Virtual Learning Environment in the education sector). Yes, there are many others, such as Atutor , Dokeos and Sakai , but they just haven’t had the same impact as Moodle. Personally, I’ve developed a love-hate relationship with Moodle.

Thanks for the the well-written article. Our e-learning site is using moodle. If the assessment and lessons are separate SCOs, then (depending upon the LMS) the student may need to complete all SCOs before the course can be marked as complete. I think having a lesson level pre-assessment may be the better approach and easier to implement in an LMS. The students can pass out of some lessons and be required to review others.
