You could use any of the many authoring tools, such as Authorware, but you needed an appropriate player. Learning Standards. Initially, when you developed eLearning, you were pretty much dependent on the tool you developed it in. It can store interim status, so you can stop and restart as needed.

They provided just enough to make us dangerous with HTML, Flash, Photoshop and Authorware. No, I do not use Authorware now, but it is hard to predict what will be an essential tool 10 years down the road. Most of which gave me a good baseline for further developing my e-learning development skills.

In the early days of e-learning course creation, you could either use your in-house instructional designer(s), self-teach yourself Authorware, DazzlerMax, and similar tools – or have your in-house ID person do it for you, outsource development to a 3rd party aka custom development for your proprietary course. Lots to like. Bottom Line.

Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim. Professional Presenter X – comes with sim tool, assessment, capture tool, documents to flash tool, etc. Assessment tool of some nature – may include survey tool.
