I have spent the last year and a half, looking to see if there were any differences between a LMS and a learning platform. You can disagree and that is fine, and I’m sure some vendors will, but this is my take. Again, some LMSs did not and vice versa, some learning platforms, did, but the norm was LMS yes, learning platform no.

Collaboration – How much longer are AT vendors going to push this out as “new”? Lots of Templates – No longer satisfied with ten, now many vendors are offering extensive list of templates. HTML5 output – Any vendor that doesn’t add HTMl5 output should be green with envy. Right now, not amazed.

If you are an e-learning vendor in the higher education space and doing or planning on doing business in Europe, this is the place to be. There was a very good amount of vendors at the show. Authoring Tool vendors – okay TechSmith and a couple of ones that were not really asynchronous based authoring tools. .

While I am sure that occurred at WOLC, the ones I gazed at, which were presented by vendors, had no sales pitch whatsoever, rather it was all about a specific subject tied to e-learning. I know a few vendors who had multiple meetings each day with potential clients – and the ones I am referring to where LMS vendors.

This is not to say that every LMS can do this, nor does it say that what the end user sees is uber-robust, but on the back end the analytical data for many systems can be significant. The quiz/assessment market is similar to the LMS space in terms of its slowness moving into mobile specifically for tablets. What about cheating?

Compliance – but just because a vendor says they have it, they be turning items that really aren’t into something that works. Built-in authoring tool – If you are expecting something like Storyline, forget it – not there yet; unless vendor has a partnership with an authoring tool vendor – example: Claro.
