Podcast 14: Managing Nonprofit Member Education at The Land Trust Alliance

Talented Learning

That’s what I discuss today with guest, Mary Burke , Associate Director of Educational Services at Land Trust Alliance. Compared with professional associations, Land Trust Alliance’s training challenges are unique, because participants are often volunteer members of land trusts or conservation affiliates and their professions don’t depend on land trust education. IMS Caliper: Caliper is the latest standard from IMS. To understand the difference between the two standards, it’s important to note that IMS and Caliper are driven by higher ed and thus of particular interest to the Educause crowd. IMS’s best known standard, LTI, allows textbook companies to package online course content and ship it with their textbooks, regardless of the implementing university’s LMS.

Me: Im an instructional designer. Im sort of distracted by the naked boy who just ran by (not mine). Then again, people tend to associate or accommodate for new knowledge right? billbrandon had this comment on Twitter: I usually just tell em Im a writer. I usually start out by saying "Im an E-Learning author" – if whoever Im talking to then has little question marks in his/her eyes, I add that I develop computer learning programs for companies.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: College Women on Gamers: They Giggle

Learning Visions

That said, Im a little concerned that the gamer mentality is sometimes presented as important to corporate culture and that as a result women should get into gaming. Im a bit of an über a-hole when it comes to stereotypical representations - the giggly "girl" (which is the name of this episode) just lights my match. I play geography games, but Im not a gamer. But then Im feeling stubborn today. There are too many associations with it (thus the Pure Pwange video).

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Women, Gaming & the Guild Master Ceiling

Learning Visions

Im concerned that women will be excluded if such a focus is put on gaming skills -- or at least the gamer label. Im just raising some questions. There may also be some stigma associated with the stereotypes of gamers that scares girls off from playing as extensively. I guess Im saying the focus should be less on "gaming" and more on use of new technology (social networking sites, gadgets, etc.)
