Recap of ASTD TechKnowledge 2013: Day 1

eLearning 24-7

Okay, the first day of ASTD TK13 has wrapped up – at least from the expo side of the house. It can be embed into your web site, added to your LMS, but to me the real awesomeness is the ability to add into any authoring tool. Can add your own audio or use one of their audio tracks – which surprisingly were not bad, actually quite a few were good. Learn a foreign language software. Equally surprising are the lack of LMS vendors.

Analysis of ASTD International Conference and Expo 2013

eLearning 24-7

It’s the yearly review of the ASTD International Conference and Expo. to the expo vendors who forgot to bring any type of product example to the show – this event will go down in history! First off, this part is going to sound like I’m bashing ASTD, and perhaps to a degree I am. If you were a volunteer to ASTD, this is not about you – it is solely about ASTD. ASTD bags – always nice. Training Reinforcement Tools – Big!

#ASTDTK14 Review

eLearning 24-7

ASTDTK14 zoomed into Vegas last week with about 60 vendors (est.) On the expo side, and I know ASTD Events are going to disagree with me (err, they already have via Linkedin), I wasn’t overly impressed on the number of vendors’ booths. Authoring tools vendors – pickings were slim, Adobe was present, so was Allen Interactions (Zebra Zapps), but no Articulate? Conferencing vendors – Were there any?

Although after talking to several vendors, irritation seemed to be a part of their response to me. Estimate 55% e-learning related content, including e-learning vendors and ILT vendors who added a “virtual training” component as part of their offerings. To me, many more LMS vendors than in the past, especially some newbies I’ve never seen attend the show. Expo vendor pick up in terms of leads and traffic. The same for vendors as well.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: The Corporate Moodle: A Tipping Point?

Learning Visions

There’s no vendor who creates Moodle per say. Kineo has recently worked on creating a classroom management add-on for a corporate client and has a fabulous Moodle reporting tool. Because (1) LMSs in corporations are primarily used to track stuff (IMHO) so until open source is truly able to slice and dice data (often custom reports) for executives they won't replace commercial LMSs. (2) Cammy, I think you're on the right track. Moodle is an awesome tool.

Low Cost LMS - Help Needed

Tony Karrer

Situation description: I have talked to several vendors and have received quotes at the 6-8k (per year) range for the licensing. We have roughly 500 learners and would use the LMS for mainly tracking and registration of ILT courses, communication (possibly through message boards), and posting of class materials. The development of e-Learning is being done through Captivate, so I do not need a system with authoring capabilities. Smaller vendors may not be found.

Say, if youre purchasing a course library from SkillSoft or some other vendor: If a client has their own LMS, do they purchase the courses outright and host them on their own servers? If so, is the vendor able to track usage or do they just sell the content for a flat fee based on LMS seat size? Or do clients purchase courses that can be launched through their LMS, but that are hosted by the off-the-shelf vendor?

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: e-Learning Content & Version Control

She raised the question about e-Learning content and how well companies keep track of content updates. Certainly with the rise of rapid e-Learning tools and the increase in SME-published content well start to see an increase in the frequency of updates to e-Learning material. As an e-Learning vendor, I think its our responsibility to make sure that our clients have thought this through. We need to find out what tools our clients use and what systems they have in place.

Many instructional designers ( Christy Tucker , Wendy Wickham ) build their own courses using tools like Captivate. But, paradoxically, it is worth noting that as instructional designers become adept at using a specific tool, their value as designers will drop.
