Review of ASTD International Trade Expo

eLearning 24-7

With great anticipation I entered the huge expo at ASTD International show earlier this week. If you think they used the ASTD app and wrote down some notes, I think you would be surprised. I would love to see a survey from ASTD sent one week after the show to attendees asking them what vendors they visited online with specific requirements that they did so, without visiting the ASTD app, ASTD online site showing the exhibitors and their web sites and the heavy book.

Kapp Notes

By making him more of a guide or knowledgeable person, I think it helps the story along and brings the learner along much more effectively than having the “informant” tell the detective everything he needs to know. If you’d like to see the finished presentation live… My presentation at ASTD ICE conference this year is titled “Three Mysterious Keys to Interactive Learning: Game-Thinking, Game-Elements, and Gamification.”

Frank Nguyen - EPSS - at ASTD

Clark Quinn

Frank Nguyen is presenting at ASTD on EPSS. His major points were: Search is not an effective method for performers to find information. Novices cannot effectively use the same support systems as experts. One of the points that Frank made that I had to jump on at the session and mention Work Literacy was that even though most people know how to use Google search, they wouldn't find it to be an effective tool. You can find his presentation on his site.

Lots of Fun at ASTD TechKnowledge 2011

Kapp Notes

Additionally, I ran into one of our alumni who is now one of the newest members of ASTD’s team–Yeah Kristin Husak and congrats on the new job! And a shout out to Linda David of ASTD who always does a great job. Ghostly effect on Aaron at Mystery House. Just returned from San Jose, CA, dug out of the snow here in the East (more on the way), caught up on stuff one always misses when travelling and now have time to write about the great time I had in San Jose.

Philadelphia ASTD Meeting Lot of Fun

Kapp Notes

Last night I presented at the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of ASTD and ran into a bunch of old friends and made some new ones. The meeting was well attended by a large number of ASTD members, some wanted see what the hype was about, some had plans to work with clients in 3D virtual worlds and some were just curious. Greater Philadelphia ASTD members learn about 3D collaboration and learning in virtual worlds.

ASTD's Big Question for December 2008: New Learning

Kapp Notes

The ASTD Big question this month is What did you learn about learning in 2008? Mobile Learning Via Audio Lesson One: If you want to find out how to create effective mobile learning, purchase a Nintendo DS and some educational games. Tags: ASTD Big Question I learn so much all the time from students, clients and colleagues, it is hard to narrow it down to just two or three things, but I'll try. Here are a few of the lessons I have learned.

The Right Place to Find Help: ASTD's Big Question

Mobile delivery & market performance : The research found that “ the delivery of internal content by mobile devices is strongly correlated to learning effectiveness and to market performance ”.

ASTD TechKnowledge

The Learning Circuits

Sunday I hop on a plane for Denver, the locus of ASTD's TechKnowledge conference. Our first unworkshop focuses on using blogs, wikis, and other web tools to improve learning effectiveness, so participants will create a blog, start a wiki, give a podcast, and so on: learning by doing. In the past, this was generally an introductory conference, with lots of very basic material. It was perfect for newbies. This year's TechKnowledge looks to be more sophisticated.

Upcoming Workshop On Designing Effective Learning Games

Bottom-Line Performance

I sat in on the inaugural session (which was sold out) at ASTD ICE last May. I’ve written quite often about our Play to Learn workshop because, quite honestly, it’s an amazing experience. It blew me away what a room full of learning professionals, split into groups and working with people they may have just met, were able to come up with in just a few short hours of game design prototyping. Some groups took a performance challenge one person was facing in their workplace.

There is also an interesting effect that people who are not attending still hear quite a bit about the conference and have some level of tangential participation. Design Day and the ASTD Big Question for July

Kapp Notes

Around the same time, the ASTD Learning Circuits Blog had the July "Big Question" which was "Choosing Tools" which is actually a series of questions: How does the eLearning design process need to change to accommodate such a wide variety of tools?
