Analysis of ASTD International Conference and Expo 2013

eLearning 24-7

It’s the yearly review of the ASTD International Conference and Expo. First off, this part is going to sound like I’m bashing ASTD, and perhaps to a degree I am. If you were a volunteer to ASTD, this is not about you – it is solely about ASTD. ASTD bags – always nice. On to the Show.

Measuring Impact (or not)

Clark Quinn

If it’s like what I saw in (then) ASTD’s State of the Industry report, it’s metrics like employees served per L&D employee or cost/seat/hour for training. However, it sounds like it’s still efficiency, just doing that for things the business thinks are important.

Upside Learning

The concept of a MOOC is itself not very old (started in 2007-2008), so I wouldn’t really worry if it sounds completely alien. You know an idea’s time has come when ASTD and CLO Magazine start talking about it and when Google launches a product (free BTW) to support the movement.

The year started off with me wrapping up my stint as the planning committee chairperson for ASTD TechKnowledge 12. I helped facilitate two ASTD Learn Now Conferences -- one in April and the other in July -- where we focused on real application of social, mobile, and performance support. This year was no let down. So what's up for 2013?

Re-evaluating Evaluation | Social Learning Blog

Dashe & Thomson

The title was “Expanding ROI in Training Programs Using Scriven, Kirkpatrick, and Brinkerhoff,” which sounds pretty academic. Organizations such as PACT, ASTD, MNISPI, and the Digital Learning Forum get my creative juices going to generate new ideas and synergies. But it wasn’t.
