As always, we try to use this blog post to speak from our experience as a learning technology partner to organizations that provide continuing education and professional development. It’s notable, too, that the DoD guidance tells implementers to continue to use SCORM for asynchronous course tracking. To the cognoscenti, they’re two different things, but for the purposes of this blog post, and to save space on the accompanying graphic, we’re lumping them together.

Here is the short, graphical version: Our 2017 eLearning predictions set in terms of Gartner’s hype cycle. And below the fold, the long version, broken into the five stages popularized by Gartner: Innovation Trigger. LTI packages vary from SCORM packages in that the typical content model follows higher education’s synchronous, weekly, semester-long format rather than the asynchronous, one-time, hour-long format of much corporate and military training.
