It seems the younger members of the workforce prefer synchronous (real-time) collaboration tools over asynchronous tools. In the future of collaboration in the workplace, tools like IM along with other real-time applications will gradually replace email. “May we live in interesting times” –Chinese Proverb. It’s amazing to see an accelerating rate of change leading up to what is now generally accepted as the true beginning of the ‘age of collaboration’.

Due to the on-demand, asynchronous nature of online training, learners can study at their own pace without taking time off work or having to follow the rigid schedules required for classroom-based sessions. And as communication with their group and coordination is also done online through messaging, forums, file sharing, emails, IM, etc., and asynchronously, members of a group don’t have to all be available at the same time to collaborate, which minimizes work disruptions.

The optimum solution may then be to reduce the required instructor-led training through the use of on-line (asynchronous) prep courses. Asynchronous e-Learning. Asynchronous e-learning includes courses and training materials that can be accessed by the student at any time. However, many good asynchronous courses do provide access to forums and threaded discussion groups to give the student the ability to ask questions or have non-real time discussions.

It is asynchronous. Im looking for the Why? I was asked about approaches for eLearning for Sales People. I’ve had quite a bit of experience with this and actually one of my very first projects was creating a pretty incredible eLearning solutions for Lexus sales people.

Im guessing youre designing online distance learning courses. Im in the weird place of for-profit education, which really has characteristics of both market sectors. Having just a bachelors degree seems to be fine as long as you arent working directly for the universities (Im not sure about K-12 online). If "distance learning" means instructor-led online courses to you though, then yes, thats what Im doing.

Im wondering if we should be talking about tiers of instructional design. Craft distance learning events for college credit that pull together elements of both asynchronous and synchronous learning experiences. Today Im feeling more like a hazy purple. Im wondering if in the carpentry example if a master carpenter would agree with you? Im sure a master carpenter wouldnt think so highly of the table I were to make should I take on such a project.

Im curious what other folks experiences has been. Im so happy to see you post this up. Im struggling with this right now. Im not on to trying to source another college or university to try out. In the academic field, I presume one is designing both asynchronous and synchronous distance learning experiences. I fill a support role and bide my time trying to finish a degree Im not really interested in.

This hasnt gotten onto my radar before -- Im not sure if there are any state-funded online programs in Massachusetts. Within higher ed, Im sure well continue to see growth in online, but it is starting to plateau a bit. All the projects provided standalone, asynchronous lessons. Im with Stephen that we need different kinds of learning options for different kids and different needs.

For any person-to-person communication that needs to be more “real time”, invest in an business-focused instant messaging (IM) service like Slack. As eLearning is by it’s very nature asynchronous, for example, your employees will be able to educate themselves at their own pace, including following their lessons from their office or home.

Asynchronous Learning. Asynchronous learning allows learners to train individually, enabling them to complete courses at a time, place and pace that suits them. The primary purpose of the LTI standard, created by the IMS Global Learning Consortium, is to connect learning systems, such as an LMS, with external service tools. A type of asynchronous instruction, self-paced learning allows learners to control the pace and timing of their progress through course materials.

And by asking this, Im not suggesting that design isnt important, for it is - its seen by some as part of the pedagogy. LMS support, LMS training, Asynchronous software support and Management jobs Ive seen all require an ID degree, however the duties dont seem to warrant a degree in ID. Im curious if youre getting any guidance from your professors/school as to where you will be able to put these skills to work in the way that you want to?
