Emerging Asynchronous Conversation Models

Tony Karrer

I had an interesting conversation with Patrick Randolph from TalkWheel about different kinds of asynchronous conversation models that are emerging and how they might fit into broader eLearning Initiatives. While Twitter is asynchronous, it's not easily used as other kinds of tools for discussion. The standard model for asynchronous conversations is discussion forum software like vBulletin. Talkwheel is made to handle real-time group conversations and asynchronous ones.

Asynchronous social learning is newer than you think

Clive on Learning

For those of us who have spent a number of years working in online learning, the idea that a group can collaborate asynchronously (not in real-time) on a learning activity is rather taken for granted - not so much 'old hat' as just nothing novel. Furthermore, because until recently there were no technologies to mediate this process, they'd also have been face-to-face. On the other hand, asynchronous learning in centuries past would have been individual and reflective.

Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning: Benefits and Limitations

CommLab India

With the global spread and time constraints, organizations today are training their employees by embracing either synchronous or asynchronous eLearning. Here we will discuss synchronous and asynchronous learning along with their benefits and limitations. Asynchronous learning : Asynchronous learning is self-paced in which courses are designed in various authoring tools such as Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, Lectora Inspire, etc.

Terms e-Learning Designers Should Know

Mindflash

Asynchronous: Asynchronous learning is a method that uses on-line technology to facilitate learning outside the constraints of time and place among a network of people. Asynchronous learning is also known as self-paced learning. Examples of technologies that can be used to facilitate asynchronous learning include learning management systems, enterprise social networks, wikis, blogs, on-line discussion forums, and even email.

3 LMS Must-Have’s to Support Synchronous eLearning

TalentLMS

With all of this flexibility and the ability to cater to each learner’s preferred learning style, most e-learning course strategies are divided into what is known as synchronous and asynchronous learning categories. The most successful e-learning courses create a combination that incorporates the use of both synchronous and asynchronous learning methods.

What is eLearning? Concept, Purpose, Types & Advantages

ProProfs

eLearning is a type of online learning where information technology facilitates the delivery of educational programs to students and other learners. This method relies on communication means such as video conferencing, webinars, chats, and instant messaging for learning sessions. Asynchronous Learning. When participants learn at their own pace without live interactions with their instructors, it becomes asynchronous. Instant learning and reference.

Bottom-Line Performance

It’s different from asynchronous learning where participants access materials on their own schedule. From the eLearning Guild’s Handbook (which is a great FREE resource), synchronous e-learning includes things like: instant messaging. Throughout the month of July, we’ll talk about how we can best use these technologies to facilitate learning. Synchronous and asynchronous e-learning aren’t just growing in the business world.

Why we need both live and self-paced communication

Clive on Learning

What caught my attention was how this 25-30% was made up, with about 2/3 asynchronous (self-paced) and 1/3 synchronous (live/real-time), although the majority of the non-e-learning elements are synchronous as well, using the traditional classroom. I wondered why it was that we continue to value both synchronous and asynchronous communication and how it came to be this way. So why throughout history have we maintained this balance between synchronous and asynchronous communication?

Now, with technology also being added to the equation, keeping up to speed with recent developments and current trends can be quite a struggle. The first type are the asynchronous courses. File sharing, shared working spaces, app integration, and instant messaging / conferencing are some features that make online collaboration a possibility. Online learning is most effective when applied to a high-tech workforce that is knowledgeable in using current technology.

In Learning, Size Matters
