The Free Way – Audacity. If you aren’t looking to invest in high-end audio software, Audacity is a free piece of software created and maintained by a community of programmers and audio experts. Audacity is great for cleaning up audio for a podcast or music. The sensitivity slider in Camtasia works the same as in Audacity.

I find that if I try to record my audio after-the-fact (in the tool itself or in an external program), it's more difficult to synchronize my audio with what's happening in the video.      I find that my "off-the-cuff" video demos sound more natural when I record my voice during the recording process.

You can export your audio tracks to clean them up in a tool like Audacity, but you may end up needing to and re-sync your audio and video again. By removing noise on the timeline you save the trouble of importing and exporting back and forth from an external program, and it’s much easier to make quick changes.

Audacity is probably the most popular of the free audio editors. The program has no installer and doesn’t write in the registry. Of course, working with audio isn’t necessarily as easy as plugging in a microphone and recording narration. It’s open source with lots of users so that means there’s a lot of help available online.
