In response to the demand for more accessible authoring tools, Authorware was born. Using Authorware , learning professionals could create learning programs with hyper-simplistic designs, primarily through dragging and dropping icons. To avoid this complexity, Authorware courses often followed a more simplistic “Click Next to Continue” style of eLearning design. If someone else needed to edit the module, but didn’t have the source file, that was a problem.

And yes, I will add that integration to Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook do appear today, but that is just minimal to the potential. The world of authoring tools started at the advanced level, Authorware, Toolbook and to an extent DazzlerMax. The problem though was that folks who had the authorware and so forth experience AND/OR folks who were ID and e-learning developers were stuck. Another problem – the authoring tool vendors themselves.

Authorware officially dies (actually this post is from 2007) while Director11 is (re)born. Sure they all have cell phones, can txt, and have a Facebook account, but that's about it. And with every business problem we need to do a new analysis of the specific audience. The iPhone is getting much better at launching video from other apps including the browser and audio/video content continues to get cheaper and faster to create.
