Look at the e-learning market and ask yourself, if the consumer market as a whole is using this, why wouldn’t vendors in our space follow suit? If you doubt it, count the number of RCATs who push or mention the fact, they can covert PowerPoint to Flash, or add video and audio to their products. I know I would.

I have seen over 150 systems, 80 plus authoring tools, dozens of web conferencing products, mobile learning, quiz assessment tools, CMSs and learning portals, and not everyone of them meets those two statements. Learning Management Systems, LCMS, Learning Portals. The worst of the offenders.

As for personal and professional development, it truly amazes me how many vendors in the e-learning space as a whole, forget this type of training. The courses were 100% online, SCORM compliant, with video, audio – including recording your voice and comparing to the speaker. Audio/video/image editing – 51.4%.

Majority of employees access a LMS or Learning Portal out of the workplace. Now, why doesn’t a vendor mention this information to a potential client, at least the first point – I can understand holding off on the second point, for selling purposes. If you look at data across the board, two points constantly appear.

The “Files&# area contains all the images, video, audio, etc., Even with a learning portal, many people have some type of database on the back end for tracking purposes. Worse, it does a disservice to a product that sees itself as a content authoring tool, not a hybrid learning management system.

Vendors who fall under these two categories: Storage limits – most Lite systems. These vendors will tell you how many courses typically can be uploaded, how many audio/video files, etc. Charge by how courses you upload and use. Prepare for the Knight Storage Assault.

Another vendor, Xplana.com allows you to create communities, share the content (courses, books, presentations, video, audio, images, etc.) Not just courses, but presentations, materials, video, audio – all user generated content. Growth in number of new vendors coming into the space. Lots of competition.
