E-Learning Screen recording and video solutions – Should b simple, so why isn’t it?

Audio Recording and Editing. The ability to record audio in real time or post time makes a lot of sense and eliminates the need for using Audacity (albeit it is a wonderful and free product). However, just placing the ability to record audio pre or post is not enough. There are more vendors who do not offer the ability to post – i.e. add audio afterwards it is quite amazing. Editing Audio. People want to edit their own audio, but here is the thing.

A Look Back at E-Learning in 2012

eLearning 24-7

Mobile Learning. LMSs – Finally vendors took notice. Sadly though many still are in the dark on true mobile learning – i.e. not accessing their platform via a mobile web browser. Authoring Tools – With only a small sample of vendors that are SaaS based, pickings are slim. Those who aren’t are either offering native apps with online/offline synch or performing the shell game via the mobile web browser and calling it mobile learning.

What I am hearing and seeing in E-Learning

eLearning 24-7

It comes from fellow readers who send me e-mails or talk to me via social media. It comes from me talking to vendors, buyers, monitoring the industry all the while taking notes and seeing the trends/patterns appear right before my eyes. What has always amazed me are number of e-learning vendor web sites whose design looks like it came from 1995 when Netscape ruled the land. Upside Learning. This is an exciting time to be in the e-learning space.

Support of the iPad, thus mobile learning.

September E-Learning Trends

eLearning 24-7

Thankfully, the latest trends in e-learning should solve your soon to be fall foliage dilemma. As you all know, I monitor the entire e-learning industry and with that comes out some interesting trends. No surprise that some vendors are also waiting to see what happens. M-Learning with a native app – slowly trucking along, but I am hearing quite a few vendors who are either in development or getting going in 2014. Want audio conferencing?

Low Cost LMSs – Yes, u can find one for under 10K

eLearning 24-7

Some systems in this space include e-commerce at no additional charge. Mobile and Social. Social on the other hand is a hit or miss. For those who charge with storage – storage includes all courses, files – including your audio, video, images and documents. Any vendor, who includes a set storage fee, should be able to provide you a range of number of courses – with examples and video/audio files – if you plan to use them.

Product Review: Saba Social

eLearning 24-7

So, when I went and checked out Saba Social, Saba’s new social learning platform, I had very low expectations. Saba Social is a very solid product, that despite a few hiccups and “huh&# moments, achieves what it sets out to do, provide a user friendly social experience. My Learning – identified the popular courses – solid. Over 25 different social media types and Saba Social sticks with the ones everyone always sees – WHY?

LMS Vendors: U Can Survive – Innovate, Invigorate and Invent

eLearning 24-7

It was within these comments, that afterwords, I decided to expand a bit plus identify other areas that I see, LMS vendors must explore – which they have not yet done so, to re-energize themselves. Thus, the LMS vendors are creating a Bogeyman – their own bogeyman, and it does not have to be that way. Majority of employees access social media sites out of the workplace. Majority of employees access a LMS or Learning Portal out of the workplace.

Social Learning and LMSs Marketplace

eLearning 24-7

As social learning continues to grow, LMS/LCMS vendors are taking various approaches. While some view themselves as “social learning&# savvy, incorporating various components, others seem to see themselves as just sitting on the sidelines. LMS/LCMS vendors are following one of three approaches when it comes to social learning. It is not as though, social learning is going to disappear. Social bookmarking.

Product Review: Lectora Snap! Empower

eLearning 24-7

Library pulls in your video, audio, flash and image files right from your video, image, flash, audio folders on your computer – GREAT IDEA – although I wish they added HTML5. One click share to Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, YouTube or their own Snap! Channel – of course if your company blocks all social media sites – I guess you are hitting the Snap! Audio recorder and adding audio. E-Learning 24/7.

Top 10 LMS/LCMS Trends and Forecasts

eLearning 24-7

The trends apply to both LMS/LCMS vendors. Extended Enterprise - Vendors are expanding into the wholesaler/reseller/affiliates/sales agent sector with their solutions. The note of interest is that it is occurring with all size of vendors, albeit the charge is being led by mid size vendors. Not all of the big dog vendors have entered this space, despite it being a huge revenue opportunity. and European vendors interestingly enough, do not follow suit.

The Latest: Rapid Content Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. This will become one of the biggest features in 2012 – especially with people wanting to create simulations without being an e-learning developer. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Over 98% of the LMS/LCMS/learning platform have at least one compliance standard, so why use a RCAT that doesn’t?

The grades are in for Education focused LMSs

eLearning 24-7

Most systems in the education space are still strongly focused on synchronous based learning. SaaS – I would prefer a vendor who offers SaaS only and not a SaaS or client hosted or G-D forbid client hosted only option. Other cool components that are part of this system, Community Content Commons – repository of learning objects, resources – created, vetted and assessed by the Epsilen community, external content providers including CSIS and PBS.

E-Learning End Users Have Spoken – time for the industry to listen

eLearning 24-7

Recently, I conducted an emerging technology survey related to e-learning and the results show that end users are utilizing technology more then ever before and are seeking product features that LMS and content authoring tools, do not offer at this current time. With an increase in e-learning sales a, projections of 7.1 billion dollars (USD) by 2015 and an increase in competition in the space, it is time for vendors to act. E-Learning 24/7.

Social Learning – What’s the Point? Time to turn the tables on the naysayers

eLearning 24-7

That is what one senior exec said to me, the other day when it came to social learning. For vendors, they could make it happen and generate revenue. Even with slideshare, you can actually post e-books and other documents, so it follows suit in a system. Read, share, print or send to mobile devices: ebooks, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations/slides, documents, images, audio/video – user generated. Incorporate Social Q/A. E-Learning 24/7.

Latest E-Learning Trends – Some good, some bad

eLearning 24-7

I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year. A trend that is happening in the LMS market more so than in the other e-learning markets, is the failure to follow their path of success.

Psst. You wanna buy some features?

eLearning 24-7

LMS vendors are continuing to add some very unique features in an effort to set themselves apart from the competition. You don’t have to go to funkytown to see some feature sets that put the “WoW” back into learning. Built in E-mail that blocks viruses, spam plus you can send out of the LMS. Desktop sharing (appears with a few vendors). Video and audio streaming. e-book publishing. Guess what some vendors do. E-Commerce.

Problems with recording audio. Video goes in and out with the audio – They explain it has to do with the latest version of Flash, but how about coming up with an alternative. Record Live Audio/Video. Let’s talk about the “record live audio and or video option” When clicking this option, the next window will ask your permission to access/use your webcam and mic. In my case I added some an audio file. E-Learning 24/7.

One Step Behind

eLearning 24-7

Back in the day, a punk rock group called Madness released a wonderful tune called, “ One Step Beyond “, sadily if you were to look at the state of the e-learning industry as a whole today, perhaps the song should have been called, “One Step Behind&#. A LMS that came with a e-commerce, a chat room, discussion boards, front end look that did not appear to a be a LMS, library, bookstore (capability), art gallery (I used it for sponsorship purposes).

Web Conferencing 201

Audio In Web Conferencing. A little known secret and often overlooked involves audio tied to recording. If the presenter is using VOIP, then audio is recorded during the presentation, because the audio is coming through the computer’s speakers. If the presenter is using a telephone, 98% of systems will not pick up the recording of the audio from a phone. Most systems do not record the audio from attendees, even if they are using VOIP, but some do.

User Friendly or Hype?

eLearning 24-7

The number one reason people leave their current system or purchase a different e-learning product? If I am a potential customer, I would expect nothing less to come out of the vendor’s mouth on their product and user friendliness. I have seen over 150 systems, 80 plus authoring tools, dozens of web conferencing products, mobile learning, quiz assessment tools, CMSs and learning portals, and not everyone of them meets those two statements. E-Learning 24/7.

E-Learning Trade Shows + Product Reviews 4 #TK11

eLearning 24-7

What I like about conferences is the ability to see the latest products and hear the pitches from the vendors. Yet, for all that do it, their are equal number of vendors who do not. E-Learning Trade Shows. Vendors who do not have anyone in their booth, during expo times – I see this at all shows, regardless of the product or market; but at e-learning/training shows you see it a lot OR you see them eating in their booth. E-Learning 24/7.

LMS vendors: R u hearing us?

eLearning 24-7

LMS Vendors. 30% vendors offer at least one type of social media – from my latest LMS directory. Dozens of LMS vendors, had typos on their web pages, zero screens of the system, links that went nowhere and two kicked up my Firewall warning of possible privacy collection and one had a Trojan Horse (I use a hardcore firewall and A/V). Many made it nearly impossible to find their social media to follow, friend or check out their social bookmarks.
