Learning Visions

Tuesday, June 09, 2009 Audio in eLearning: When Rough Around the Edges is Better At our seminar today on using Articulate and Moodle and "Doing More for Less" , the conversation turned (as it always does) to using audio in eLearning. They had the SME record the audio for the slides. Im not sure if the SME was reading a script, reading the notes, or just speaking from the heart. So heres to more guerilla audio recording!

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Learning Styles

Learning Visions

In the context of e-Learning (back then it was just plain old CBT), this meant you had audio/video on the screen with timed text bullets. The learner could listen to the audio if her preferred style was auditory, OR read the text if her preferred style was visual. This means that I learn best through my visual channel, next kinesthetic, with audio being my weakest channel. Im with you. I always tune out the audio and read ahead.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: The Scrambled Egg Mind of a Beginner

Im in that beginner-mind zone. Although Ive been doing this work for 15ish years, the ground beneath me is shaky and I feel like Im in new waters, navigating new people, new processes, new tools. Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Describing What You Do: Instructional Design

Learning Visions

Me: Im an instructional designer. Im sort of distracted by the naked boy who just ran by (not mine). billbrandon had this comment on Twitter: I usually just tell em Im a writer. I usually start out by saying "Im an E-Learning author" – if whoever Im talking to then has little question marks in his/her eyes, I add that I develop computer learning programs for companies. And then they think Im a flippin genius!!!!

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Jott This Blog

Learning Visions

Tuesday, March 25, 2008 Jott This Blog I havent had so much time lately to blog, as this project Im working on has been quite grueling. I find my best time for thinking up excellent blog entries is late at night when Im lying in bed. That is, of course, if Im even awake after the kids have finally fallen asleep. Now Im trying to maximize my time on the drive to work. Things Im learning: I have to talk much more slowly. Otherwise Jott doesnt get what Im saying.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: All The Worlds A-Twitter

Learning Visions

Like Tracy Hamilton , Im enjoying the endless thought streams. Im having fun hearing the stream of peoples activities and thoughts ("ambient intimacy"), but is that all there is to it? I know people consolidate and slim down ( Brent , for instance), but Im not sure Im ready for that challenge. Im cammybean on Twitter. Im aware that SOMEONE is fighing a cold, but cant always remember who that was. Im still not sure how it fits me.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Currently Working On.

Learning Visions

Im a convert. Yes, Im an English major who writes mostly text bullets instead of novels. So Im curious: what drove you to revisit theory? Cammy, Im glad to hear you so revved up. Jane -- In theory, Im not against theory. Im still of that mindset. Unfortunately, life has been getting in the way of my informal degree intentions, but my brain has started to resurface of late and Im back on board. Now Im reading Cold Spring Harbor.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Beginning Instructional Designers Toolkit

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: 7 More Things You Dont Need to Know About Me.

I think Im an inherently lazy person. Im supposed to tag seven other people, which Im feeling really lazy about. So Im just doing six. can you tell that Im re-reading Lord of the Rings? Cammy--Im preferring to think of it as not "lazy" but "balanced." And even if it is, I think Im with you on that one. :-) 9:45 AM Cammy Bean said. Cammy Beans Learning Visions: The Value of Instructional Designers

Learning Visions

But Im not sure I can get people to hold their answers back. Sorry Tony, but Im going to jump into the conversation now. Dont worry though; Im sure Ill still have more to say if you do this for the Big Question for February. Im on a smaller team though, so we are basically the "one-stop shop." If Im giving someone job advice on how to get into the field of instructional design, Im still going to tell them that additional technology skills will help.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: My Facebook has Tipped

Learning Visions

Im not talking about the quantity of my friends, but rather the breadth and depth. Im not sure if there was a specific tipping point for me, but I was certainly amused when one of my friends informed me that Im personally responsible for making her waste more time on Facebook than she ever thought possible. Christy -- Im all for games increasing brain power. Im with Christy - not sure when the "tipping" point occurred.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Instructional Design Inspiration

Learning Visions

Monday, November 05, 2007 Instructional Design Inspiration As I mentioned last week , Im in the midst of designing my first custom eLearning course in quite awhile. Now that Ive been actually doing some writing, Im having to put it all to work. Here are some of specific ideas Ive taken from a few sources that (Im hoping) will help me design a kick-ass course: Chapter 2 of Gadgets, Games & Gizmos for Learning by Karl Kapp. Theres more, Im sure.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Getting Pysched for FaceBook

Learning Visions

Monday, June 25, 2007 Getting Pysched for FaceBook Im definitely feeling out-of-my element in this whole FaceBook thing. Im trying to get into it and discover its potential professional uses. Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Using FaceBook

Learning Visions

Tuesday, June 19, 2007 Using FaceBook Im trying to expand my horizons a bit these days and have been taking a closer look at a whole bunch of tools out there, including SecondLife and FaceBook. So Ive got this client Im working with to help define an e-Learning strategy , and Im thinking about what role FaceBook should/could play in their plan. Im interested in how we could leverage that existing community for better communication, learning opportunities, networking, etc.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Blogging & Boundaries in the Professional Sphere

Learning Visions

To work out my thoughts and ideas (hey, Im an extrovert -- I need to talk about whats going on in my head in order to process it and take it to the next level). Im a new blogger -- not fully evolved). At least, I would hope thats what Im doing. Im trembling with excitement (perhaps naively so), having never had the opportunity to attend an industry-related trade show. Im excited to meet people whose blogs I have been reading.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Getting to Good Enough

Learning Visions

" This adage works for me most of the time as Im designing eLearning courses. Right now, Im feeling like just getting to good would be an achievement. Right now, Im proofing a storyboard thats full of endless text bullets and boring software demos with no interactivity -- and theres really nothing I can do about it. Im into next time right now with this same client -- unrealistic scheduling needs on their part mean compromised quality.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Blogging the Personal

Learning Visions

In fact, Ive had very little of interest to add to any conversation of late, mostly because Im much more focused on my personal life and the many transitions Im handling there. Hey Cammy--you know me, I think you can always apply the personal to the professional, so Im with Karl that you should blog about the Wii. So Im pretty open to talking about things that interest me, stuff Ive learned, even if it has origins in personal parts of my life.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Getting an Informal M.Ed

Learning Visions

For various reasons, Im not going to go back to school to get a Masters Degree in instructional design. But I firmly believe that this journey Im on is giving me the experience and educational equivalent (if not better) than a formal M.Ed. Even though Ive been doing this ("instructional design") for over ten years, Im starting over. Im putting my beginners mind back on; Ive realized how much I dont know about this stuff.

Im losing my steam, but trying to stay somewhat on target. So go ahead and "Email or IM another blogger in your niche to introduce yourself and your blog". I want to share as much as I can about projects Im working on. Im not sure Ill bother with that. Another application I tried through another site I had problems with too, so it could be because Im at work trying stuff out. Im not sure if it does much for a site with minimal traffic.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: 31 Days: Day 25 (Go Shopping)

A good aggregator (like Stephen Downes) will get me the info I need so Im not missing the really juicy stuff. Im sure many of you are the same. Im sure this relates to blogging -- the enticing thrill of a delicious looking link that can send you off in a myriad of directions. Im off looking at the new interesting thing in a heartbeat. Im too distracted.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Visual and Auditory Multi-Tasking

Learning Visions

For instance, dont show a detailed animation and have text on the screen with an audio narration. I dont think the answer is to only show a visual, or only have audio. I couldnt see the original citation (maybe a bad link) but I can easily imagine a visual-with-audio presentation that requires no actual thinking on the part of the learner. Im not sure what to make of it, honestly. Were the video and audio identical? Im way out of practice.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Are You A Gamer?

Learning Visions

Im literally not a gamer. Im not sure how I got into games.but I think it had something to do with PONG. But Im so lost at sea for the most part in these environments. But Im no gamer. I dont do the online social games, so Im not a Gamer 4.0, but Im definitely a gamer. Now Im feeling a full-blown survey coming on. Im glad the gender gap is on the eLearning Guilds radar. Like Karl, Im into Second Life and really use it like a game.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Half of Companies Blocking Facebook

Learning Visions

Im no Facebook super-user and I havent experienced a huge time suck from it, but I suppose its possible. Cammy, Im just a "lite" Facebook user, but I have seen profile pages that list their workplaces with commentary about how horrible their company is, or how much they hate their job. So Im not sure the issue is people leaking secret information, but maybe just companies afraid of being bad-mouthed. And Im in complete agreement.
