Like the “pinch” in an hourglass, compression helps devices and the internet keep up with a big stream of data. A container is the file that contains your video and audio codecs and any closed caption files as well. Audio actually uses it’s own codecs. Back in the day, I learned to record sound to magnetic tape (including the black art of editing sound by physically splicing bits of tape together), before moving to DAT, mini-disc, and finally recording and editing audio in a purely digital environment about 10 years ago. Today, I use multitracked audio to create podcasts for distribution on the web and via iTunes , demos, simulations, training videos, and a host of other learning applications.

According to a study conducted by Edison Research in 2012 , 29% of adults have listened to an audio podcast, up from only 11% in 2006. Social media streams are crowded, fast-moving, and crazy competitive. But then they slow down … pause … there’s something moving in their stream … it’s a video! Here is my three-step approach to adding captions with my favorite tool and the host of this blog, TechSmith Camtasia. Select the audio track, then from the main menu, click Modify > Captions > Add Captions. (or or just right click on the audio track and choose “Add Caption” from that menu).

After your Facebook Live is over you can export only the audio and upload to an RSS feed (I use Libsyn ). Use Camtasia to make edits or even add simple audio bumpers to make it sound like a podcast. Simply export the audio from the 3 smaller YouTube videos.
