An alarming rate of “get the content up now, ASAP&# regardless of what it looks like, instructional design is typically tossed out the window, especially when the ID, CD or whomever is tasked to create is handed a stream of documents in Word or PPT or some other form. Trainers handed the task of building courses and incorporate the builds as an extension of ILT – i.e. linear. PENS was created in 2005 by AICC as a new interoperability standard.

Use of PowerPoint in rapid content authoring tools – this has been a big irritant of mine, since the days when PPT first made its appearance in rapid content authoring tools. Some vendors use chapter-page approach with PPT, but there are plenty who do not (why?). Even with just content only – like PPT or video files.

Innovation abounded and the push to focus on the “PPT to Flash&# angle continued to shine. Import and convert PPT to the web, add rich media. Comes with a screen capture tool, spell checker (many RCATs do not), Slide audio recording & editing. Same thing with PENS i.e. a SCORM LMS that does not support PENS will not work with a PENS content authoring tool.
