CMS: An Alternative to a LMS for those who seek Portals or Communities

eLearning 24-7

While the race is on for people to get LMSs and LCMSs, there are some people who either do not want or need a LMS/LCMS, but want to create a learning community or more often, some type of portal – intranet or internet. They may call it a “learning portal&# or “training or knowledge portal&# or whatever. And, with the costs of a LCMS or even some CMSs, you might want to seek out the open source – FREE way. Social Learning – What’s the Point? Time to turn the tables on the naysayers

eLearning 24-7

That is what one senior exec said to me, the other day when it came to social learning. I believe this is very possible, because regardless of the generation, people want easy, they want fast and if they could do a lot of things in a system for example, rather than having multiple windows open, they would do it. Read, share, print or send to mobile devices: ebooks, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations/slides, documents, images, audio/video – user generated.

The Revolution is Coming: Consumer Tablets and E-Learning

eLearning 24-7

E-Learning and all forms within are normally taken via your desktop computer and either hitting your company’s server with your browser or going to a hosted LMS vendor’s solution. If you wanted to work on creating content, for many people, the route would be and still is creating courses via a desktop based rapid e-learning authoring tool, or via your LMS/LCMS vendor’s tool (hosted or not) or via Dreamweaver or some other type of solution. Open Peak.

Social Learning and LMSs Marketplace

eLearning 24-7

As social learning continues to grow, LMS/LCMS vendors are taking various approaches. While some view themselves as “social learning&# savvy, incorporating various components, others seem to see themselves as just sitting on the sidelines. LMS/LCMS vendors are following one of three approaches when it comes to social learning. Dip their feet in it – just a bit, a little here, a little there – oh and call it a full social learning platform.

They are similar to what you see in your standard LMS, course content, learning paths, reporting – but it is not as robust (which is fine for some end users). They love to show the amount of space in huge font and what it means (x number of courses/content, graphics, files, audio, video, etc.). If you are an e-learning vendor exploring the SBM do not take them lightly, a few are slowly entering my 2nd trend. Marketplaces & Exchanges by LMS/Learning Portal Vendors.

E-Learning Innovative Products – They are Out There

eLearning 24-7

I especially love it when it happens in the e-learning industry. Innovators and Risk Takers – emerging technology integrated, new ideas, pushing the envelope in what is possible in e-learning/social learning/m-learning, coming up with something that has never been done before – risk takers. You do not want to switch, but your current LMS, doesn’t have the social learning or any social learning features I need or want. E-Learning 24/7.

A greater number of people, worldwide are using SaaS then ever before, mobile products, tablets – especially the iPad – is growing at a feverish pace, people are using online storage, beyond just placing photos and media, and open source is continuing expansion. While there are a couple of vendors out there who have incorporated e-mail that can go to outside to people, rather than just within the learning management product, the overall space isn’t doing it.
