Built-in audio narration tools including some editing. Use of PowerPoint in rapid content authoring tools – this has been a big irritant of mine, since the days when PPT first made its appearance in rapid content authoring tools. Some vendors use chapter-page approach with PPT, but there are plenty who do not (why?).

PowerPoint – Ability to integrate or use PPT in your courses. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. The latter is slowly gaining speed, which is an advantage to LMS vendors who have a CAT in their own product – which is SCORM,PENS/IMS compliant.

In the context of e-Learning (back then it was just plain old CBT), this meant you had audio/video on the screen with timed text bullets. The learner could listen to the audio if her preferred style was auditory, OR read the text if her preferred style was visual. I always tune out the audio and read ahead. Ditto with people.

Feature sets – they have to be more than PPT to Flash or add an audio clip and video clip to the course. Yes, it offers the social learning authoring features – robust actually, which most vendors in this space does not, but it has added task management and PENS. #7 Can add HTML5 audio and video (SWEET!).

Innovation abounded and the push to focus on the “PPT to Flash&# angle continued to shine. Import and convert PPT to the web, add rich media. Comes with a screen capture tool, spell checker (many RCATs do not), Slide audio recording & editing. Some acquisitions, some goodbyes, but overall very strong. Supports HD h.264

PowerPoint still reigns – If you are a course purist, the idea that PPT should be seen as an authoring tool should make you grumble with disgust. . Yes, you can use it for many different things, and yes, Microsoft has an add-on that turns PPT into something similar to Adobe Presenter. PowerPoint is presentation software.
