Social Learning and LMSs Marketplace

eLearning 24-7

As social learning continues to grow, LMS/LCMS vendors are taking various approaches. While some view themselves as “social learning&# savvy, incorporating various components, others seem to see themselves as just sitting on the sidelines. LMS/LCMS vendors are following one of three approaches when it comes to social learning. It is not as though, social learning is going to disappear. Social bookmarking.

LMS vendors: R u hearing us?

eLearning 24-7

LMS Vendors. 30% vendors offer at least one type of social media – from my latest LMS directory. Dozens of LMS vendors, had typos on their web pages, zero screens of the system, links that went nowhere and two kicked up my Firewall warning of possible privacy collection and one had a Trojan Horse (I use a hardcore firewall and A/V). Many made it nearly impossible to find their social media to follow, friend or check out their social bookmarks.

LMS Vendors: U Can Survive – Innovate, Invigorate and Invent

eLearning 24-7

It was within these comments, that afterwords, I decided to expand a bit plus identify other areas that I see, LMS vendors must explore – which they have not yet done so, to re-energize themselves. Thus, the LMS vendors are creating a Bogeyman – their own bogeyman, and it does not have to be that way. Majority of employees access social media sites out of the workplace. Majority of employees access a LMS or Learning Portal out of the workplace.

Social Learning – What’s the Point? Time to turn the tables on the naysayers

eLearning 24-7

That is what one senior exec said to me, the other day when it came to social learning. For vendors, they could make it happen and generate revenue. LMS/LCMS/Learning Portals (commercial & free), Social Learning stand-alone systems, hybrid system, content authoring tools, m-learning, web conferencing (already exists in many systems), virtual worlds, virtual meeting systems (already exists in some systems), marketplace exchanges (not affiliated with a system).

Social Media Offerings which can b used in Social Learning

eLearning 24-7

Social media types with examples. New social media types are being created, identified and defined constantly. Bi-weekly updates, which can be found on the “Social Media Page&# under my Essentials section, that debuts on Monday. With the exception of crowdsourcing, all other social media types can be used in social learning. Social Bookmarking – Delicious - spelled often as del.icio.us Social Network Aggregator - Netvibes.

Continuous Learning: The Social Give and Take of Podcasting

Talented Learning

I spent decades traveling for business and have long been addicted to audio learning content in all forms – including audio books , audio courses , talk-radio and now podcasts – to learn and help pass the travel time more quickly. Music is great, but on a seven-hour drive, nothing is better than audio learning. What I didn’t expect were the unintended, social learning benefits of podcasting. Continuous Learning: Vision vs. Reality.

Evolving the E-Learning Experience for the 21st Century

eLearning 24-7

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. While there are a couple of vendors out there who have incorporated e-mail that can go to outside to people, rather than just within the learning management product, the overall space isn’t doing it. Innovation drives the market (regardless if it is e-learning or not).

Top 10 LMS/LCMS Trends and Forecasts

eLearning 24-7

The trends apply to both LMS/LCMS vendors. Extended Enterprise - Vendors are expanding into the wholesaler/reseller/affiliates/sales agent sector with their solutions. The note of interest is that it is occurring with all size of vendors, albeit the charge is being led by mid size vendors. Not all of the big dog vendors have entered this space, despite it being a huge revenue opportunity. and European vendors interestingly enough, do not follow suit.

Education learning management system trends

eLearning 24-7

Mobile Learning. This is one of the most shocking trends in the space – the significant lack of mobile learning in these systems. So why the delay in using mobile learning, especially with tablets in education focused LMSs? A file repository in the LMS world is the ability for end users/administrators to places files into a library or folder if you will whereas students can access, view and download the files (documents, video/audio etc.). Social Learning.

E-Learning End Users Have Spoken – time for the industry to listen

eLearning 24-7

Recently, I conducted an emerging technology survey related to e-learning and the results show that end users are utilizing technology more then ever before and are seeking product features that LMS and content authoring tools, do not offer at this current time. With an increase in e-learning sales a, projections of 7.1 billion dollars (USD) by 2015 and an increase in competition in the space, it is time for vendors to act. Learning Platforms & Emerging Technology.

5 Trends to Watch 4 n 2011

eLearning 24-7

They are similar to what you see in your standard LMS, course content, learning paths, reporting – but it is not as robust (which is fine for some end users). They love to show the amount of space in huge font and what it means (x number of courses/content, graphics, files, audio, video, etc.). One vendor with 750 users, priced out at nearly 24K a year; another close to 11.5K – thus depends on users is a factor. Social Learning and M-Learning.

Product Review: Knoodle

eLearning 24-7

Problems with recording audio. Video goes in and out with the audio – They explain it has to do with the latest version of Flash, but how about coming up with an alternative. Record Live Audio/Video. Let’s talk about the “record live audio and or video option” When clicking this option, the next window will ask your permission to access/use your webcam and mic. In my case I added some an audio file. E-Learning 24/7.

E-Learning Innovative Products – They are Out There

eLearning 24-7

I especially love it when it happens in the e-learning industry. Innovators and Risk Takers – emerging technology integrated, new ideas, pushing the envelope in what is possible in e-learning/social learning/m-learning, coming up with something that has never been done before – risk takers. When they hit stride, other vendors take notice and soon, the lemming revolution begins. An e-learning marketplace. E-Learning 24/7.

Product Review: Saba Social

eLearning 24-7

So, when I went and checked out Saba Social, Saba’s new social learning platform, I had very low expectations. Saba Social is a very solid product, that despite a few hiccups and “huh&# moments, achieves what it sets out to do, provide a user friendly social experience. My Learning – identified the popular courses – solid. Over 25 different social media types and Saba Social sticks with the ones everyone always sees – WHY?

A Look Back at E-Learning in 2012

eLearning 24-7

Mobile Learning. LMSs – Finally vendors took notice. Sadly though many still are in the dark on true mobile learning – i.e. not accessing their platform via a mobile web browser. Authoring Tools – With only a small sample of vendors that are SaaS based, pickings are slim. Those who aren’t are either offering native apps with online/offline synch or performing the shell game via the mobile web browser and calling it mobile learning.

State of the LMS 2012

eLearning 24-7

For the past month, I have been conducting a survey on learning platforms and specifically learning management systems. . The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems. Do you have a LMS/LCMS/Learning Platform. Today, however more and more learning management systems are bringing into content management features, inc.

Top 10 LMSs for 2013

eLearning 24-7

Back again to bring this first in a series of rankings for the top ten learning management systems for 2013. Vendors can move up, down or out of the rankings – after all it is on-going. I’m not a lead gen for the vendors listed – rather the goal is to provide you with vendors that meet numerous criteria including UI, features, support/service, mobile, feedback from current and past clients and future game plans. Support of the iPad, thus mobile learning.

Product Review: Litmos LMS

eLearning 24-7

Less functionality and features than their standard counterparts, but these features may be “social learning&# , or “ability to tie a user to a course&# or “creating learning paths for each user&# or “assessment tools&# , etc. Pricing includes “storage&# which is listed. “Storage&# size = courses/content, files – media (audio, video), documents, pdfs, graphics, etc. Segment as a whole is growing in terms of vendors.

New Authoring tool rankings #11 to #20

eLearning 24-7

If you like having scenarios in your courses, you will this tool, because not only does it come with a scenario builder, but also custom branding with your player, a ribbon style similar to what you see in the Microsoft Office products (which adds a familiarity touch), audio and video narration, screen capture/recording, assessments, interactions such as 3D cube, panoramic zoom, and ebook. No reason, I just love saying that) Mzinga shows up with a true social learning authoring tool.

Latest E-Learning Trends – Some good, some bad

eLearning 24-7

I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year. A trend that is happening in the LMS market more so than in the other e-learning markets, is the failure to follow their path of success.

Psst. You wanna buy some features?

eLearning 24-7

LMS vendors are continuing to add some very unique features in an effort to set themselves apart from the competition. You don’t have to go to funkytown to see some feature sets that put the “WoW” back into learning. Desktop sharing (appears with a few vendors). Video and audio streaming. Section 508 (still shocking at the lack of vendors that fail to offer this feature). more common is partnering with a web conferencing vendor).

When is a LMS not a LMS?

eLearning 24-7

Next Gen Lite Learning Management Systems. A learning management system is a heavy pancake. If I am not really looking for a learning management system but want some basic things, I’d consider that route. But make no mistake about it, they are learning management systems with a twist. They are the next generation of lite learning management systems and not the anti-establishment of such systems. E-Learning 24/7.

TechKnowledge 2012 – Post Assessment

eLearning 24-7

Nice selection of vendors – in general. More goodies then in the past, but the vendor with the awesome monkeys – it was nearly impossible to get one – you had a better chance of allowing them to stick leeches on you, then getting one – what’s the point of marketing – if the product you want to show – yours – isn’t walking the floor with folks. Less vendors scanning people’s ID badges, which I found interesting.

M-Learning: Where’s the app for that?

eLearning 24-7

With all these vendors talking about their solution and its capabilities on mobile devices, it should be easy to find an app for that. Regardless if the vendor is m-learning specific, content authoring tool, LMS, web conferencing or a hybrid. Nowadays more and more vendors (thankfully) are seeing the benefit of mobile devices. Thus they can advertise they offer mobile learning. Perhaps they even have a mobile learning feature within their system.

#10 to #1 LMSs of 2012

eLearning 24-7

10 eLogic Learning - Essential LMS. TinCan support with mobile learning, however no on/off synch. Mobile learning support, but no TinCan nor on/off synch. M-learning support, assignment grader can be offline and then re-synched online, but courses can not be online/offline. Jam – which is their social learning and collaboration tool. M-Learning with online/offline synch, native app, supports HTML5, gesture based design, MP4 and yes even EPUB.

The grades are in for Education focused LMSs

eLearning 24-7

Most systems in the education space are still strongly focused on synchronous based learning. SaaS – I would prefer a vendor who offers SaaS only and not a SaaS or client hosted or G-D forbid client hosted only option. Other cool components that are part of this system, Community Content Commons – repository of learning objects, resources – created, vetted and assessed by the Epsilen community, external content providers including CSIS and PBS.

Product Review: Cornerstone OnDemand

eLearning 24-7

Leader board within “Connect” their social learning component – however, I did not see any type of incentive tied to it. Social Learning in general – can’t anyone come up with something fresh? Additional charge for “Connect” their social learning set, unless you purchase the Extended Enterprise Cloud (then it is included). Resources – docs, video/audio files, podcasts, PPT, etc. E-Learning 24/7.

Product Review: BlueVolt

eLearning 24-7

Ability to have video with audio on the main screen, whereas end users enter – after logging in. Mobile Learning – yes you can view it on tablets and smartphones. Social Learning – No. Many people today prefer 3rd party authoring tools and in fact, I recommend that route rather then using a vendor’s built in authoring tool. E-Learning 24/7. At one time BlueVolt was just a spark, a system among many other systems in the market.

One Step Behind

eLearning 24-7

Back in the day, a punk rock group called Madness released a wonderful tune called, “ One Step Beyond “, sadily if you were to look at the state of the e-learning industry as a whole today, perhaps the song should have been called, “One Step Behind&#. The vendor? Throughtout the short existence of e-learning, there are dozens of more companies who ended up in the same way. As we know, the majority of people who access e-learning content (inc.

Rapid Content Authoring Tools 2010 – Innovators, Winners and Updated Trends

eLearning 24-7

2010 E-Learning 24/7 Awards (No official icon logo handed out to winners, rather just a “WHOO-HOO&# – uh, you can make that sound to yourself.thank you). Sure, other vendors will say you can do that too, but you have to open each object file to get it. Comes with a screen capture tool, spell checker (many RCATs do not), Slide audio recording & editing. Clever and logical features, especially when it comes to emerging technology with e-learning.

Product Review: Plateau TMS (Talent Management System)

eLearning 24-7

Plateau Learning. This appears on the right side of the main screen and lists options such as “Approvals, Record Learning, News, Skills Inventory, Self-Assessment, Reports, Google, etc.) Unless you have a dedicated person from IS or IT, you either start to learn some basic db skills or learn SQL or cry. This is Plateau’s social learning component, and it reminds me of a cross between a COP (Community of Practice) with some social learning functionality.

The Revolution is Coming: Consumer Tablets and E-Learning

eLearning 24-7

E-Learning and all forms within are normally taken via your desktop computer and either hitting your company’s server with your browser or going to a hosted LMS vendor’s solution. If you wanted to work on creating content, for many people, the route would be and still is creating courses via a desktop based rapid e-learning authoring tool, or via your LMS/LCMS vendor’s tool (hosted or not) or via Dreamweaver or some other type of solution.
