New Authoring tool rankings #11 to #20

eLearning 24-7

Initially I wasn’t going to post authoring tool rankings beyond the top ten, until July. However, in the past week, I have received over 500 e-mails from readers requesting a list of the top twenty (rather than top then). 1st vendor to have online/offline mobile synch.

Times are changing – trends in the content authoring tool market

eLearning 24-7

As the rapid content authoring market continues to grow, new features and capabilities are equally growing. There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that? Even though more tools are adding the features of collaborative and peer review (more on that in a sec) they are still heavy geared towards a desktop solution. Mobile Learning. Vendors to Watch.

Authoring Tool Market – What I am seeing

eLearning 24-7

Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. Right now I am doing a survey on authoring tools (more on this at the end of the post) and so far 100% of all respondents state that HTML5 output is required in an authoring tool. I do believe that HTML5 output will continue to grow as an authoring tool feature. The numbers clearly indicate that is on the fast track for real growth in the coming year. .

Product Review: EasyGenerator Rapid Content Authoring Tool

eLearning 24-7

EasyGenerator is a SaaS based content authoring tool that is like a piece of fine sculpture, with some cracks, but beauty that is hidden within. Extremely feature rich – can compete with Captivate and other authoring tools. File, Edit, View, Tools and Help.

Questions to Ask Ur Prospective LMS Vendor

eLearning 24-7

If you are like the thousands of other people exploring the purchase of a learning management system, the key to success is asking the right questions. . Because if you are using a content authoring tool that is SCORM 2004, then you must find a system that is at least 2004. Your tool will not work with a 1.2. Unless you purchased a tool that is only AICC compliant, which in that case, time to ditch it and get another one. Can you track the end users in it?

E-Learning: Did you know.

eLearning 24-7

I love going to LMS sites and seeing a list of clients that the vendor lists. Especially the LMS vendors who also create custom content/development. That some vendors who provide a list of clients may not be clients of their LMS, rather they are current or past clients of custom course development. Yep, you read that right, and best or worst of all, they (vendor) never tells you, unless you inquiry. For the vendor to achieve success in the demo.

HTML5 Fans Rejoice – Adobe Ditches Flash Player on Mobile Devices

eLearning 24-7

This will only empower folks in the e-learning industry who were pro-HTML5 and believed as I do, that it is the better route to go. Right now, at m-learning vendor locations around the world, especially in the RCAT space, they should be scheduling meetings and coming up with a new perspective and approach to their products. For LMS vendors, adding “HTML5 feature sets makes sense – especially if they are adding mobile learning components in their system.

5 E-Learning Forecasts for 2012

eLearning 24-7

They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. LMSs/LCMS/CMS/learning platforms in commercial and open space continued their presence. I have seen continued interest and downloads for open source AR tool kits. For the mobile learning space – it is a necessity.

Recap of ASTD TechKnowledge 2013: Day 1

eLearning 24-7

It can be embed into your web site, added to your LMS, but to me the real awesomeness is the ability to add into any authoring tool. Can add your own audio or use one of their audio tracks – which surprisingly were not bad, actually quite a few were good. It’s one big drawback – no support for SCORM, but hey, since it is ideal for sticking in to your course, rather than as a standalone authoring tool, it works. E-Learning 24/7.

E-Learning Takeaways

eLearning 24-7

For the rest of us, it isn’t, unless you see the latest takeaways as examples of what is to come or more importantly what hasn’t – which is really a could be doomsday to many vendors – unless they wake up! E-Learning Apps.

DevLearn Day 2

eLearning 24-7

One of the wonderful things I love about attending expos is the ability to see new products and new vendors. For example, there were several vendors making their debut – as in their solution – at DevLearn. Not only does it show that this industry, i.e. e-learning is continuing to grow an enhance, it also shows the naysayers – we are not going anywhere – so go after the ILT people and leave us alone. E-Learning 24/7.

How to choose the right LMS

eLearning 24-7

The same thing applies to the learning management system market. The minus: vendors come out of the woodwork to tell you their system meets those needs. I mean if you say you need “e-commerce for 500 users, certificates, ability to add users to groups for courses”, that would cover about 550 systems. No vendor could say honestly that their system is the best for you, because they are missing a lot of information. Whichever sticks – is your vendor.

Break it down! (No it’s not Hammer Time! Yet)

eLearning 24-7

I’ve also learned firsthand, how to make it work in any vertical and any industry. Authoring Tools. Learning Management Systems. Mobile learning platforms. Social learning platforms. Do I need an authoring tool if I have a LMS? Do I need to get an authoring tool that is SCORM or can it just be proprietary? If you want to track in a learning management system or learning platform that supports SCORM then you want it.

to the expo vendors who forgot to bring any type of product example to the show – this event will go down in history! An additional fee of $700 per day for vendors who wanted to use Wi-Fi, which some vendors found to be spotty at best. Training Reinforcement Tools – Big!

Halftime! LMS trends though July

eLearning 24-7

When you need a fix, then the LMS vendor must work with you either remote to solve it or if it is big nasty fix, go on site. SaaS and LMS vendors. I now pronounce you Authoring Tool and LMS, you may now integrate/interface. I’m still a believer that it is wise to use a 3rd party authoring tool rather than use an authoring tool built into a LMS. From a LMS vendor perspective there are a lot of pluses. E-Learning 24/7.

#ASTDTK14 Review

eLearning 24-7

ASTDTK14 zoomed into Vegas last week with about 60 vendors (est.) On the expo side, and I know ASTD Events are going to disagree with me (err, they already have via Linkedin), I wasn’t overly impressed on the number of vendors’ booths. Authoring tools vendors – pickings were slim, Adobe was present, so was Allen Interactions (Zebra Zapps), but no Articulate? Conferencing vendors – Were there any? The vendor told me that in Feb.

Product Review: Mindflash.com

eLearning 24-7

Mindflash.com bills itself as a training management system, with the ability to create and upload courses, invitee end users (learners) and track results. APIs and Mashups r ur new ABCs for E-Learning

eLearning 24-7

Unfortunately, too many vendors in the e-learning space have failed to see the power and potential of this capability, and have decided to ignore them. An API (Application Program Interface) enables an interface from a piece of software to communicate with another piece of software (in its simplest form) or multiple pieces of software (called a mashup). However there are vendors who sell their API solution wrapped in a piece of software.

Product Review: GeoLearning GeoMaestro

eLearning 24-7

Offers Lectora (rapid content authoring tool) as a separate option which can integrate with GeoMaestro. Social Learning standard features – Lame. Social Learning add on module – Not a lot for what you get at an additional cost. It is truly amazing on how vendors seem to think lots of stuff on the page, is the way to go and navigation is just a requirement. Why vendors still think this is not needed or used, makes no sense. Social Learning.

Product Review: Melon LMS

eLearning 24-7

I can see some of the issues in larger systems, whose track records on the back end of confusion aligns with this, but not from a Lite LMS whose goals are different. Latest Eight #LMS #Trends

eLearning 24-7

They are your new BTF – “best trend forever” Trend 1 – Learning Mastery. Systems are starting to use the term to stipulate that their system provides a higher quality of mastery (learning) than anyone else. You want learning mastery? I have those every weekend, so why as an adult learner do I want it as a benefit to learning? Another one on the rise for LMS vendors and honestly, e-learning vendors as a whole.

Video and LMSs – Why changes will need to be made in 2014

eLearning 24-7

With 2014 already in play, it is time for many LMS vendors to awaken by the trumpets playing the background – you might think it is Muzak, but no it’s trumpets. In 2014, I believe it will be the year of video for consumers in e-learning, specifically with content and as a one off on that – in the LMS. Ability to play video courses within a LMS – not as a component within the authoring tool – rather as a pure standalone.
