GOANIMATE: Character-Based eLearning Made Easy

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

One of the hottest new tools for eLearning development is GoAnimate.   I’ve been working more and more on ways to integrate GoAnimate with more traditional eLearning lessons and content. But I wanted a tighter relationship between the video and the Excel software simulation lesson. That is actually a screenshot of an Excel software simulation created in Adobe Captivate.   e-learning eLearning GoAnimate

Editing with Acrobat: Get the Comment Pane's Numbers to Match Acrobat's Page Numbers

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

Endless confusion resulted when she tried to discuss editorial changes with authors--Is that on page 2? Acrobat picked this number up from the desktop publishing software used to create the document. But how do you discuss your comments with an author who is looking at a printout that has the "logical" page numbers on it?   Need help with Acrobat's many editing tools? by Jennie Ruby.

TEACHING ONLINE: Instructors Take Note!

For example, if I know one of my learners for eLearning software is going to be creating training videos for active-duty nurses, I might mention a few ways to engage learners without audio voiceover. Because the nurses may be trying to absorb the eLearning while working at a station in a busy ward, where they can’t use earphones!     Jennie Ruby, CTT,  COTP , is a veteran eLearning developer, trainer, and author.

Writing & Grammar: Where Did My Name Go?

When the copies came back, every change was marked as coming from "Author." In Word 2003, that function is found under Tools > Options > User Information. A second test, making sure that the By Author setting was active throughout the process, again failed to reveal the makers of each change. The Inspect Document tool is found by choosing Office Button > Prepare > Inspect Document. On most documents, that tool is grayed out as unavailable.

Microsoft Word: To Track or Not to Track Changes

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by Jennie Ruby Track Changes in Microsoft Word is an indispensible tool for editing, but it is not the best tool for the job in every editorial situation. Even if a reviewer of the edited document wanted Power Point to be printed with a space, you would not allow it, because PowerPoint is the proper name of the software. Despite these contraindications, Word's Track Changes tool is still the way to go for indicating text edits for review.

Click the bottom half of the Track Changes tool, and select Change Tracking Options. If you choose By author , Word automatically assigns each person who comments on the document a different color. Your readers have seen other publications that use capitalization for the names of on-screen tools and buttons, and the tools themselves display names that are usually capitalized. For software training documents, follow the on-screen displayed names of things. Are you an eLearning developer who has been tasked with creating an effective voiceover script? Writing & Grammar: Ways to Deal With Tracked Changes Aversion

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

" Editors and publications people take my classes, but then express despair at the thought of getting their colleagues to cooperate in doing their reviews with the software: "I can see a fight coming." As my colleague Dave Mankin said once in an Acrobat class , we have to be emissaries to our less tech-savy coworkers and explain the features of the software and show them the many ways it can be used beyond the basics. by Jennie Ruby.

Microsoft Word: Customize the Status Bar

Once that tool is on your status bar, you can turn Track Changes on and off without a trip to the Review tab. Some of these are present by default, others must be selected from the right-click menu, but each of these tools is more than a simple indicator. The Macro Recording shortcut allows you to start and stop recording without a trip to the View or Developer tab.   Are you an eLearning developer who has been tasked with creating an effective voiceover script?

Writing & Grammar: Of Hooks and Ladders

But these symbols have a huge limitation: Many designers, layout artists, and eLearning producers don't know them. That fact leaves us at square one unless we do learn the marks, educate our colleagues about them, use some online tools, or do all three. Even when using Acrobat to communicate corrections, I find that I, and many other editors, like to grab the Pencil tool and just make the standard proofreading mark right on the PDF.

Writing & Grammar: Do You Know Your Dashes?

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

I was helping a group of editors develop Word macros to correct punctuation problems when I was stymied about a punctuation mark they spoke of: the "double-dot." Aside from the anthropological observation that groups working in isolation will eventually develop a unique dialect of their own, I pondered the inefficiency of making up your own vocabulary for common items. I received stories about one trainer who had a roomful of people singing out loud, and another who cracked up a group with a fun "test" question that let learner's admit that the software they were learning could be a pain. Writing & Grammar: Editing in the Cloud

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

Both Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat have a "Send for Review" tool. Here is an overview of the two programs' tools for reviewing documents. The Microsoft Word Send for Review tool requires Outlook as your email program. The Comments tool allows for more extensive discussion of the document. Writing & Grammar: A Brief History of Editing

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

When I started developing procedures for electronic editing in the 1980s, no word processor had a method for showing the changes to be made to a document. When WordPerfect came out with their "redlining" feature, I jumped on it, but stick-in-the-mud reviewers and authors balked, claiming the marked up text was hard to read. Acrobat's graphical mark-up tools? Are you using a mixture of electronic tools and paper printouts? by Jennie Ruby.

Writing & Grammar: Do I Italicize the Comma After an Italic Word?

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

Now type the word Maryland : the software will automatically abbreviate the state name.   Italics can cause kerning (spacing) problems that are visually distracting and that must be corrected manually in your design software. The problem is aesthetic, and you have to decide whether it is worth the time to fix this typographic nicety through manual kerning (if your software can even do that). by Jennie Ruby.
