The RCAT (rapid content authoring tool) market continues to be healthy with nothing to slow it down – uh, except maybe one thing (more on that later). Yeah, I know we have just jumped into January, but in a review of the past several months, authoring tools continue to follow a similar path amongst themselves with certain feature sets. I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. HTML5.

Feature sets – they have to be more than PPT to Flash or add an audio clip and video clip to the course. Again, not every tool below is SaaS based, but at some point, you have to move to the SaaS world, especially if you are offering or saying you do – some type of mobile learning functionality. I’ve seen some authoring tools that fit most of the criteria above, but whose ease of use is substandard or even really bad.

Times are changing – trends in the content authoring tool market

As the rapid content authoring market continues to grow, new features and capabilities are equally growing. There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that? Even though more tools are adding the features of collaborative and peer review (more on that in a sec) they are still heavy geared towards a desktop solution. They output only to HTML5.

Without boring you to death on the details of HTML5, what I will say is this will be a game changer in our industry for a number of reasons. and YouTube (beta) are already offering videos in HTML5 players.
