With the release of Studio ’13 a few weeks ago, I thought it would be a good time to update my authoring tool comparison grid. As always, this grid reflects MY OPINION of working with each of these tools. Studio ’09 could not output to HTML5, so it was a non-starter for iOS delivery. Software Simulations.

Whenever a comparison of eLearning authoring tools is published, Captivate still is considered to be the best tool for creation of software tutorials. Sorry for my cynical attitude, had many discussions with authors over that type of articles. Workflow 3: Software simulations. Viewers expect short videos.

Adobe Captivate is one of the best authoring tools available to eLearning professionals. It also removes the ability to publish flash content as flash is now dead. This option will not report any scores back to LearnUpon. Quiz Score: There are two options, percentage or points format. SCORM Preferences.

Many elearning authoring tools let you create a course with SCORM output without any programming knowledge. SCORM lets you monitor basic data like whether a learner has completed a module and their overall score, but it won’t let you track anything more detailed than that. It was designed for Flash. You may also be interested in reporting options that show the time taken to complete the course, the learner’s assessment score, etc. For example, having learners practice in a software “sandbox” instead of using the actual software. Flash allows development of animated content that can be played using a browser.
