Nice selection of vendors – in general. More goodies then in the past, but the vendor with the awesome monkeys – it was nearly impossible to get one – you had a better chance of allowing them to stick leeches on you, then getting one – what’s the point of marketing – if the product you want to show – yours – isn’t walking the floor with folks. Less vendors scanning people’s ID badges, which I found interesting.

I wish it wasn’t so, but that is the world we live in today, and part of the reason this is happening is due to: Rapid content authoring tools (they know who they are). One well-known vendor told me they want people who are brand new to online learning course building, or if you think of a triangle, the bottom of that pyramid. People coming from ILT who have never built an e-learning course. Usually I find the PPT driven approach, due to it.

That said, there were some hiccups and from an entire vendor wise (expo here) angle, some unique and some, uh. I can honestly say, the ATD show is changing from ILT driven (it has always been that way) to e-learning improvement. This year, I estimated a 55/60% e-learning, including some ILT vendors offering some type of e-learning component. . I just can’t understand the “bricks and mortar” approach so many e-learning vendors use, unreal.

Low Cost LMS - Help Needed

Tony Karrer

Situation description: I have talked to several vendors and have received quotes at the 6-8k (per year) range for the licensing. We have roughly 500 learners and would use the LMS for mainly tracking and registration of ILT courses, communication (possibly through message boards), and posting of class materials. Learning Visions

Many instructional designers ( Christy Tucker , Wendy Wickham ) build their own courses using tools like Captivate. He says its important that instructional designers understand the tools and technology that are out there (as an architect understands building materials), but an instructional designer should be tool-independent and "technology-agnostic". What really bothers me more so, is when certain learning system vendors tell me they do not offer social or NexGen functionality because their clients either do not want it or because of security concerns by the client.
