The Latest: Rapid Content Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

The RCAT (rapid content authoring tool) market continues to be healthy with nothing to slow it down – uh, except maybe one thing (more on that later). Yeah, I know we have just jumped into January, but in a review of the past several months, authoring tools continue to follow a similar path amongst themselves with certain feature sets. I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: My Top Ten Tools for Jane Hart

Learning Visions

Thursday, July 26, 2007 My Top Ten Tools for Jane Hart Jane Hart asked me to add my own top ten list to the mix. Im not a techie -- far from it. Im an instructional designer with an emphasis on writing and schmoozing. For the most part, I like tools that are easy to use, easy to learn, look good, and create good-looking output. Google Alerts A nice adjunct to Google Reader; Im always discovering something new via my "instructional design" alert.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Debunking the Learning Styles Myth

Learning Visions

Take learning a piece of software. If youve ever taught a software class, you know you will have explorers in your class who will wander off the track being presented in class following the "I wonder what happens if you do x" train of thought then get lost from where you are going. When I present the concept, I talk about sorting a mug full of pens and pencils. You can sort it pens, markers, pencils. Im definitely not saying to throw out the baby or the bathwater here.

I said a similar thing in a comment on Tony Karrers blog the other day: Isnt the main tool of the PLE our very own little brains? Its the best software around and completely portable. Tony came back talking about all the tools he uses as an extension of his brain. Then I realized Im a constant notetaker, in the pen-and-paper sense. Thats one way for me to process the information Im seeing/hearing, and the same may be true for at least some live bloggers.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: The Smell of Books

Marginal annotations, which abounded in the centuries when readers usually went through books with pen in hand, identify the often surprising messages that individuals have found as they read. Great post, Cammy and Im completely with you on loving the physical feel of a good book. At the same time, in regard to annotating books and the insights they give you into the minds of individuals, I think that many of the tools we have now keep the same kinds of records.

The ones who may not are those who identify themselves as “Training mgt systems and alike” – because they are really focused on the course authoring tool and are not a LMS in the true sense of the word. Built in course authoring tool – gaining steam – some are now moving to a partnership with a 3rd party course authoring tool – Personally, I’d rather use my own 3rd party authoring tool than one built in.
