Tool Set 2009

Tony Karrer

I thought I'd kick off this year by posting a series of posts on topics related to tools and methods for work and learning. I'm hoping to address questions such as: How do you create a personal tool set or Personal Learning Environment (PLE) for yourself? What should be in your tool set? What are the most important methods to adopt in addition to the tools? Should twitter be part of your tool set? Tools to Make Reading & Research More Effective.

Online courses must die!

E-Learning Provocateur

There’s method in my madness… The myth of rapid authoring. The proliferation of so-called rapid authoring tools over the last few years has coincided with an explosion in the number of online courses developed in-house. Just like a typical online course, without the fancy software or specialist skills. Unlike a PLE, an ILE is communal. You have more time, and new tools are coming out that are making these kinds of thing easier to do.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Personalization does not equal Personal

The personal web

Learning with 'e's

With the Southampton PLE Conference #PLE_SOU at full throttle, I thought it would be a good time to reiterate my views on the personal web. Personal Web Tools (PWTs) are thought by some to be synonymous with PLEs (Personal Learning Environments) but the two should not be confused. The report goes on to define personal webs as self created, and consisting of online tools that suit each individual's unique preferences, styles and needs. Sound like a PLE?

Interestingly, the students reported that they found the blogs useful for reflecting on action, and the authors postulate that with tutor support over a greater period of study time, meta-reflection might emerge as a result of prolonged blog writing, and revisiting of content. The second PLE paper by Cascero et al, proposes an even deeper form of compromise, suggesting a middle ground between institutional provision and personalised tools and spaces. An institutional PLE?

Tuesday, June 12, 2007 My Personalized Personal Work Learning Environmental World Tony Karrer asked in the comments on my PLE post yesterday , Im curious if you distinguish your learning environment (tools, skills, etc.) from your work environment (tools, skills) in any significant way (especially in the context of tacit work)? At first glance, Id say that most of my "personal" learning does not happen with technology tools at all.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Be the Node

First off, I have to say that this entire PLE conversation hasnt really sparked much for me. So all the talk about tools and maps has struck me as odd. All the many cool tools and widgets and features that really smart people are creating -- thats all we need. Maybe it was even "personal learning" before the term PLE came along. I dont see a traditional corporation every truly embracing the theme of PLE -- at least in the pure sense of the term "personal".

Deep Problems with Our Tools - e-Learning, Social Learning, etc.

I am often skeptical about the many types of learning tools, e.g. social networking, e-learning, LMS, rapid e-learning, even PowerPoint, etc. In the adoption of tools and technologies in learning and training, many pundits fall victim to the same fallacy. PLE - Personal Learning Environment , the new idea that people must now master their own learning as a consequence or as enabled by abundance of open learning technologies.

I was also asked why I didn't use the term PLE (Personal Learning Environment). The authors of the 2009 Horizon Report (I cannot recommend this document highly enough) succinctly define the personal web as "a term coined to represent a collection of technologies that confer the ability to reorganize, configure and manage online content rather than just viewing it". So the PLE conversation has been, for me, framed in terms of the LMS and tools. How do you make an LMS into a PLE? And it started dawning on me that the PLE was about a revolution in learning -- about teaching people to learn -- about empowering individuals to take control of their own learning environments, their futures. And -- maybe -- also providing them with tools. And teaching people how to use the tools for their own growth. PLE is a concept.
