Again, not every tool below is SaaS based, but at some point, you have to move to the SaaS world, especially if you are offering or saying you do – some type of mobile learning functionality. I’ve seen some authoring tools that fit most of the criteria above, but whose ease of use is substandard or even really bad.

During my presentation, I flashed up on the screen a list of the 122+ tools listed in the Brandon Hall database. of tools used: 39% use four or more tools!

Yesterday, I saw what Rapid Intake is doing with their tools to allow authoring of Mobile Learning - what they call mLearning Studio. By way of background, Rapid Intake provides tools that allow you to very rapidly input content that is composed into courses. Rapid Intake's web player is Flash-based.

I suspected that the expo would feature a large quantity of rapid content authoring tools. Not so much, from what I saw – some of the tools were underwhelming (granted some were quite impressive), but rather how the vendors themselves perceived where the market is going and what customers want in their authoring tools.

There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that?
