Initially I wasn’t going to post authoring tool rankings beyond the top ten, until July. However, in the past week, I have received over 500 e-mails from readers requesting a list of the top twenty (rather than top then). A few vendors say “social learning” but it is often far from it.

As the rapid content authoring market continues to grow, new features and capabilities are equally growing. There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that? Hmm, oh yeah mobile learning. at the numbers in just 7 months.

I-Content is not an authoring tool, so Plateau is not involved in the actual content creation, that is left up to the end user. Lectora’s Snap! Lectora Snap! Spelling – I am always surprised at the number of authoring tools who do not have this feature. Channel – of course if your company blocks all social media sites – I guess you are hitting the Snap! interfaces directly with the product (ribbon? I am unsure if Snap!

Vendors who added innovative features including text to speech (way to go SoftChalk), to true HTML5 support (Claro, Cm-Studio, Rapid Intake, Toolbook and sort of HTML5 output – Lectora) to image editors, SDK kits, gaming sims and Sony PSP devices.
