Authoring Tool Trends for 2017

eLearning 24-7

The authoring tool industry continues to evolve. I won’t regurgitate everything that appeared and did not for that matter in the authoring tool space as a whole in 2016, but a few have crossed over in a positive light, which is pushing trend. Similar to the one I had for an LMS, here is the Authoring Tool version for 2017. The big item to remember here is that it will be a separate license or licenses to use the authoring tool that is directly integrated with the LMS.

Be Wary of Authoring Tool Comparisons

Adobe Captivate

When I first got into designing and developing eLearning, it was around 2004, and the first authoring tool I used was Adobe Captivate 2.0. That LMS was from SumTotal, and they also wanted to sell their authoring solution as well. This authoring tool was Toolbook, and I believe it was version 9. Based on that, you might think that I would be qualified to at least offer my opinion with a comparison between Toolbook and Captivate, but I feel differently.

Fears of the Course Authoring Tool Market

Its nearly Halloween and with that comes the shocking and fearful excitement or lack thereof of the scariest things on the plane appearing at the movie theaters, in costumes, television and for us, the course authoring tool market. Lessons from the past

dVinci Interactive

In 1989, I created my first interactive video using an authoring platform called IconAuthor, and it required a newfangled operating system called Windows 2.1. Other technological improvements followed rapidly – Windows 95 was a game-changer, as was the introduction of the PC authoring system Toolbook along with cross-platform tools like Director and Authorware. CD ROMs became easy to author, but they were soon supplanted by the ubiquity of the internet.

Over the years, I have used ToolBook, Trainersoft, and even Dreamweaver with Coursebuilder. It has gotten to a point where some of my courses are all developed in Flash and the e-learning authoring tools (DHTML) have been used more as a "shell" that decompiles it as a SCORM package. I really prefer the robust ability of creating courses in Flash and only use the DHTML e-learning authoring tools for their ability to make the course SCORM or AICC compliant.

Instructional Design Orthodoxy

Xyleme

I will be dating myself here, but so much of the orthodoxy in the instructional design process was forged back in the late 80’s and early 90’s when the only Computer-Based Training (CBT) tools were Toolbook for the PC, and Hypercard for the Mac. Even as we progressed from CBT to Web-based Training (WBT) in the 90’s the orthodoxy still held and most of the authoring tools enforced the no-scrolling constraint.

What Do We Mean When We Say HTML5?

The Learning Circuits

I often use the phrase “the HTML5 stack” to communicate more clearly, but to me, the main thing is that people have good resources to keep them up to date on the capabilities of the technology, the delivery platforms, and the authoring tools. And that brings us to one final complication: The makers of authoring tools—the people we often count on to help us deliver on our designs—aren’t always very invested in helping us cut through the hype to find what we need.

Two situations recently have got me thinking about e-learning authoring tools. Secondly, I've been doing some work for a client of mine that has an LMS with some authoring capabilities, trying to compare what they have to offer with what's available elsewhere. Everybody's got an authoring tool. Of course, all authoring tools have always described themselves as quick and easy to use, with absolutely no programming required, but of course we know otherwise.

Shift in eLearning from Pure Courseware towards Reference Hybrids

Q&A - eLearning Standards Especially SCORM

There are also standards such as WebDAV that are going to be important for authoring tool implementations in the next few years.
