CBT Prior to online learning known then as WBT, and then the latter term of e-learning (vendors today, use it to refer to content that is online), there was CBT. CBT was the “new” and exciting way to learn. The vendor had partnerships with off-the-shelf providers. WBT (Web-Based Training).

My latest take on those three vendors (plus one) are: Cornerstone On Demand – I have seen the new UI and I like what I saw. They also have a lot of partnerships with LMS vendors – so that adds to an additional distribution channel. . This is why, you see some vendors doing quite well and others who are not.

I came into rapid e-learning from the world of Authorware and Flash where building courses took a lot of time and cost a lot more money. As soon as I asked that question, I heard all of the bellyaching from our Flash developers and most of the custom e-learning vendors we hired.

Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. In just the past month, I have seen quite a few vendors add this capability in their product – and for the most part they are all RCAT products. Well some vendors have more than 15 come with their product. HTML5 output. Not anymore.

The biggest problem facing the industry in the past few years are the lack of course authoring tools for e-learning developers and instructional designers. Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim. Bottom Line.

If I am a potential customer, I would expect nothing less to come out of the vendor’s mouth on their product and user friendliness. Some vendors who have failed to deliver, in my opinion, a user friendly system, due to front end or back end (admin side), or sometimes both. If I am vendor, whose product is paid (i.e.

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Listen, Authorware is dead, so why create a product that is trying to bring it back to life with your own product? It isn’t.
