Back when I first started developing e-learning courses, I used Macromedia's Authorware. For more interactive elements, I used Flash and imported the SWFs into Authorware. The learning interactions can be used for multiple types of quiz questions that will be tracked by a learning management system (LMS).

Interface creation, navigation buttons, LMS tracking, and testing abilities are then typically added to the PPT functionality. I “grew-up&# in eLearning world using Director/Authorware and then moving into Flash/HTML (PPT was “off-limits&# ). Everyone has PPT.

Hypercard and Authorware both launched in 1987, making it easy to create multi-media programs. As a result, on-premise, client/server based, learning management systems became commonplace in the enterprise. SCORM, and the SaaS based LMS. The computers were great, but software was lacking.

Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim. Over the last ten years or so, major elearning developers have preferred to use tools like Flash, Authorware and Director from Adobe (earlier Macromedia). Creating animation is also quite complicated as one has to code time slots and animation effects parameters manually into the XAML file. Elearning development tools: only Adobe?
