He is the author of seven book including a best-seller on creating effective e-learning and in has received ASTD’s Distinguished Contribution to Workplace Learning and Performance Award in 2011. If ADDIE produces the products you want, does so comfortably, and works effectively with the constraints you work with, I’d stick with ADDIE.

In the early days of e-learning course creation, you could either use your in-house instructional designer(s), self-teach yourself Authorware, DazzlerMax, and similar tools – or have your in-house ID person do it for you, outsource development to a 3rd party aka custom development for your proprietary course.

Firstly, I've been doing some more work on the script for The 30-minute masters which, if you remember, aims to teach the essentials of instructional design to subject matter experts in no more than 30 minutes. Two situations recently have got me thinking about e-learning authoring tools.

Anyone who used Authorware can attest to that. And yes, someone can teach themselves to become an expert in a specific software, but too many people pitch themselves as an expert because they know how to do 50% of the product very well or specific items 100% of the time, and nothing else.
