This month's ASTD Big Question is, again, a series of questions. Apparently one BIG question is not enough for the learning and development community. I don't totally agree that work and learning are exactly the same, there is some overlap but there are specific things workers need to learn that do not result in a direct work product. It would be great for the worker to learn to write more efficient reports but learning to do so is not a work product.

Seven Things I Learned This Year

And every year I use this as a Big Question – see: Learning 2010. I’d ask questions and edit it. And a big part of the problem is just how many there are and how fast they change. Flash may Die and HTML 5 is Going to be Big 2010 opened my eyes are Flash and HTML 5. This, of course, means some really big changes for authoring tools in the industry.

I Feel the Need - The Need for Speed

Actually most of us that are Concept Workers will find that we play in that upper right quadrant most of the time. And when you consider the trends for most concept workers (knowledge workers), we clearly are heading towards faster moving content aimed at smaller audiences.

To-learn list?

My calling is to help people in organizations perform more effectively and lead more fulfilling lives. As a knowledge worker, learning is my work. Incidentally, I always learn from reading the multiple perspectives of people answering The Big Question. Do you have a to-learn list? A to-learn list is like a curriculum. It presupposes foreknowledge of what we need to know. The faster our world changes, the more often we will face with novel situations.

The Big Question this month is Workplace Learning in 10 Years : If you peer inside an organization in 10 years time and you look at how workplace learning is being supported by that organization, what will you see? How big are they as compared to today? Jay Cross in Ten Years After puts it: In a knowledge society, learning is the work. The main objective of the new training department is to enable knowledge to flow in the organization.

2009 Predictions How Did I Do?

But the reality was more than that as I explored in posts like Business of Learning and Models for Learning Questions. The second half of the prediction “self directed learning” got less attention during the year than I anticipated, but it was there and certainly was a big part of the discussion around social and informal learning. At the same time, organizations who try to create big eLearning 2.0 2009 is going to be a big year for this issue.

And probably will get some more ideas from the Big Question - Predictions and Plans for 2010. It puts forward lots of suggestions for how knowledge workers can leverage technology to make themselves more effective. I actually think this is some of the most valuable stuff on my blog, and I believe that most knowledge workers are not really taking advantage of this at the level they should. It’s really big and moving really fast.

So I was super excited when I saw that Nancy White, who helps me learn about all things communities and networks , posted a response to the New Skills for Learning Professionals Big Question for July 2009. The November LCB Big Question was "Are ISD / ADDIE / HPT relevant in a world of rapid elearning, faster time-to-performance, and informal learning?" And I find that second bullet especially troubling given that the crux of the question as Mark Oehlert from e-Clippings put it: If the question of whether or not your job is relevant fails to stir up some considerable heat - then I despair for us. That was actually quite a big surprise to me.
