Thus, the LMS vendors are creating a Bogeyman – their own bogeyman, and it does not have to be that way. Majority of employees access a LMS or Learning Portal out of the workplace. ASTD International Conference Day 1 Wrap-Up

eLearning 24-7

It was an exciting first day, with lots of vendors hitting the entire training spectrum. Here are my favorites: Numerous vendors were unhappy that they had to pay $700 a day for Wi-Fi, that didn’t work most of the time or was slow. One vendor who spent $5,000 on their booth, thought the $700 a day fee was obscene and declined. Other vendors weren’t so lucky. SumTotal – Get ready for a new UI for the learning module. Features include: Community dashboards and developer blogs. I’m always amazed at some of the names vendors come up with for authoring tools.

Authoring Tool Market – What I am seeing

eLearning 24-7

Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. If you are an e-learning developer or instructional designer this has always been a favorite feature of authoring tools. In just the past month, I have seen quite a few vendors add this capability in their product – and for the most part they are all RCAT products. Well some vendors have more than 15 come with their product. One vendor has a gaming raceway for quizzes.

Low Cost LMSs – Yes, u can find one for under 10K

eLearning 24-7

Some systems in this space include e-commerce at no additional charge. Any vendor, who includes a set storage fee, should be able to provide you a range of number of courses – with examples and video/audio files – if you plan to use them. Many vendors’ sites do not state this information in their pricing. Some 50K or more systems could learn from the top low cost systems on some things. E-Learning 24/7.

The growing number of businesses leaving Microsoft Outlook to Internet e-mail is amazing. Learn a foreign language software. Follows a conversational approach to learning – which is so much better than hearing the word and then repeating it, with zero idea on what it means and more importantly, how to use it in general conversation. I see it not only as a standalone but also as a course or courses within a learning platform. Out of all the shows, this is the one show that brings the most decision makers, and yet the number of vendors here is not great.

Social Learning – What’s the Point? Time to turn the tables on the naysayers

eLearning 24-7

That is what one senior exec said to me, the other day when it came to social learning. For vendors, they could make it happen and generate revenue. Even with slideshare, you can actually post e-books and other documents, so it follows suit in a system. Expand it, so that e-books, documents, audio files can be viewed on e-book readers, if it is ePub (the most used format, and recognized with every e-reader, sans Kindle) it will work. ditch the blog).

In today’s corporate world, you can not toss a rock in any direction without someone mentioning SharePoint as the glorious solution for social learning and in many cases a LMS. The Latest: Rapid Content Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. This will become one of the biggest features in 2012 – especially with people wanting to create simulations without being an e-learning developer. They are similar to what you see in your standard LMS, course content, learning paths, reporting – but it is not as robust (which is fine for some end users). If you are an e-learning vendor exploring the SBM do not take them lightly, a few are slowly entering my 2nd trend. Social Learning and M-Learning.

I must have been sleeping, but when did “learning” slide under Talent Management? When did “learning, which is training” become a defacto component of Talent Management? Better yet, when did “learning/training” become a component of Human Capital Management? Learning management systems are not dying.
