Top 50 LMS Report for 2016 – What you need to know (criteria, approach, and yeah some vendors)

And yeah there are vendors who will taut that they are in X list or Y rankings and thus should be included. This isn’t a beauty contest, nor a pay for play (I NEVER accept that, nor play that game, nor do I accept any referral fees or whatever some vendors offer for recommending them). Even open source systems. Are they better than every other vendor in the market? Not every vendor mind you will state this, but a few have and still do.

Big Dog (Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, Cornerstone OnDemand, Learn.com). Open Source Systems – That have to be 100% free to be considered. If you are seeking TM as your focus and you want one of the big dogs – I found Plateau’s system to offer appropriate functionality for it, but found some real concern in other areas (see my product review). Open Source LMSs are not on the list, you can find this information here. The market continues to grow it is nearly impossible to see every vendor’s latest solution. Additionally, vendors can cease to exist quickly. There are a large number of vendors who support ERP systems, inc. Some vendors use the words “VLE&# – but in a deeper dive, it is a LMS for them. The Extended Enterprise blog post and directory will be visible this weekend. There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market. Open Source Systems.

User Friendly or Hype?

If I am a potential customer, I would expect nothing less to come out of the vendor’s mouth on their product and user friendliness. Some vendors who have failed to deliver, in my opinion, a user friendly system, due to front end or back end (admin side), or sometimes both. Plateau Talent Management System. A few vendors (and not just on the above list), customize so much, that you really have no idea on what the system originally looked like.

Top Three Open Source LMSs of 2013-14. One of these vendors is listed in my top 50. Moodle - Whether you like it or not, the system still reigns supreme for free open source. But, as we all know, nothing is ever really free, so if you go open source make sure you have the resources to invest to make it robust.
