Product Review: Plateau TMS (Talent Management System)

eLearning 24-7

I’ll be the first to admit, that I was not a big fan of the previous versions of the Plateau system. After viewing the Plateau TMS, my concerns in one area have been eliminated, in others, not so much. Plateau LMS is a Talent Management System, made up of four modules. Plateau Learning. Plateau Performance. Plateau Career and Succession. Plateau Compensation. Front end (what the end user sees) UI – A giant Kudos to Plateau.

And yeah there are vendors who will taut that they are in X list or Y rankings and thus should be included. This isn’t a beauty contest, nor a pay for play (I NEVER accept that, nor play that game, nor do I accept any referral fees or whatever some vendors offer for recommending them). These are vendors who have been around a long time, build share of the market and generally speaking had early name recognition which has helped them in build business.

Never mind, now back to our regular scheduled blog. Oracle then followed suit by acquiring SuccessFactors who had acquired Plateau in the past. I’m sure the people who had purchased Plateau or even SuccessFactors Learning system were delighted to hear the news. What about other companies out there in the HCM space, will they be seeking to acquire LMS vendors with such a goal in mind? To me, this is how vendors skirt the issue. .

User Friendly or Hype?

eLearning 24-7

If I am a potential customer, I would expect nothing less to come out of the vendor’s mouth on their product and user friendliness. Some vendors who have failed to deliver, in my opinion, a user friendly system, due to front end or back end (admin side), or sometimes both. Plateau Talent Management System. A few vendors (and not just on the above list), customize so much, that you really have no idea on what the system originally looked like.

Big Dog (Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, Cornerstone OnDemand, Learn.com). If you are seeking TM as your focus and you want one of the big dogs – I found Plateau’s system to offer appropriate functionality for it, but found some real concern in other areas (see my product review). Please remember for TM or as some vendors like to pitch as “performance management or knowledge management&# , the modules are extra and are not part of the system (at least for now).

Once a darling of vendors who used it to show their demos, now? In fact, in 2019, I did not see one demo from a vendor on Adobe Connect. Personally a vendor can call their system whatever they want, but there are a few factoids to remember about micro-learning. Welcome.

eLearning Portal Integration

Many LMS vendors provide portlets, gadgets or widgets that allow for access of learning content (most often meaning courses and courseware) through the corporate portal. Many LMS vendors provide this capability. For example, a Plateau case study (PDF) talks about: The biggest benefit Reuters has seen from its Plateau LMS to date is from deep linking functionality. With deep links in Plateau, users can launch content in two or three clicks.

Special Post – Why the Big Four are not on my latest Top 10 LMS List

eLearning 24-7

Since my Top 10 list of LMS vendors has been posted online, I have received quite a bit of e-mail wondering why the biggest names: Cornerstone On Demand, Saba, SumTotal and SuccessFactors are not on the list. When I talk about a LMS, I am saying specifically a learning management system and the vendors themselves should see their own product first and foremost as a LMS, not as a TM/PM or whatever. Plateau is long gone and buried and people should realize that.
