Collaboration Tools

Tony Karrer

As I mentioned in Real-Time Collaborative Editing , I had a fantastic experience participating in group editing of a Mind Map of collaborative tools during a session at Learn Trends. You can see the result below. But it was interesting to see the results exported which I've embedded below. I would expect the document to continue to grow and change, but thought it would be worth having it available in a text format as well (so I can find it when I need it).

e-Clippings (Learning As Art): " Visual Thinking, Imagery, and the Brain" (Eide Neurolearning Blog)

Mark Oehlert

Their post mentions and links to a PDF of an article in press, entitled " What Brain Imaging Can Tell Us About Embodied Meaning ," by Marcel Just. One passage from the abstract is "A set of fMRI studies on visual imagery in sentence comprehension reveals both the perceptual-motor and the symbolic aspects of brain function that underlie language processing. I think Im going to go read the full article and then probably look at this again.

As has been noted in a number of posts here on the Social Learning Blog, including “ Collaborative Learning Lessons from Wikipedia (and Small Insects) ” and “ The $2 Whiteboard Shows Power of Peer-to-Peer Learning ”, while a core curriculum of base training material is essential to spark the learning process when new technology or processes are being implemented, it is when people begin talking that the really handy learning begins.

Rx for SMEs

SMEs have a ton of work to do and generally keep their heads down until all work is done — defining requirements, documenting processes, testing, collaborating on training content, and training end-users. Set up a Web-based content collaboration site (wikis work great for this). The SME can then visit the site when they have time and do a structured brain-dump. Im a problem-solver and thoroughly enjoy helping clients succeed and look good.

And Ive seen their little brains work like crazy to solve a game problem in Fantastic Contraption that is REALLY working their mental muscles. I RARELY see that type of brain power and interest being applied to ANYTHING the school has offered. No matter the subject matter, they should be developing the tools to help them analyze situations, solve problems, collect data.and then learning the importance of practice, collaboration, and learning by failing.

6 Effective Ways To Increase Employee Productivity

For all the improvements in communications, business IT, collaboration tools and technology in general, running a productive team remains as hard as it ever was. Initially devised as a way to bring a team on the same page quickly, they are now a way to waste company time on useless banter, boring presentations, and brain-dead “brainstorming” sessions.

Nevertheless, their voices are deeply etched in my brain, and I could have picked any of them out of a lineup if we were going by voice and not visual. If I notice Im losing someones attention in class, Ill instantly make direct eye-contact, maybe raise an eyebrow, and start talking directly to that student, and most of the time. Im the same when teaching face-to-face -- big user of the laugh to create connection.

Is Attention Important in Learning?

The Learning Circuits

A recent CNET article noted that the typical office worker is interrupted every three minutes by an e-mail, IM, phone call, etc. If you are working on something creative, it takes about 8 minutes for our brains to get into that state. Like many issues in collaboration it is the "people and process issues" that are the crux of the problem. With all these distractions how is anyone able to get anything done?
