I am going to use the concept to describe two different sorts of knowledge and the different way we learn them. #1 1 is intuitive knowledge and #2 is logical knowledge. Intuitive knowledge. Intuitive knowledge is what Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman describes in Thinking Fast and Slow as System 1. It’s the province of the emotional brain. Intuitive knowledge works with patterns; it knows no words. Rational knowledge.

What is the Important Work?

Not surprisingly for regular readers, I think that the nature of work is changing. In essence, to do the important work faster. Call it knowledge work, call it concept work, the point is that execution will only be the cost of entry, innovation will be the necessary differentiator. The fact is, our brains are really good at pattern matching, and bad at rote work. Training people to do rote work is a dying enterprise.

Our formal learning approaches too often don’t follow how our brains really work. It’s part of what my colleague Harold Jarche talks about when saying “work is learning and learning is work”, the notion that as organizations start empowering workers to adapt to the increasing complexity, there will be no difference between work and learning, and we’ll have to move away from the ‘event’ model of learning and start integrating learning more closely into our activities.

I suppose it will take bigger brains that mine to figure out why people just accept what they are told or what they believe as final word, regardless of facts and data. First we need to know our stuff, build our knowledge, work up a curiosity and not accept myths as truths – let’s take Learning Styles as an example; find research, find data, read the whitepapers, and draw your own conclusions. Those types of debates are good for the brain, it feeds the mind.

Knowledge workers have replaced factory workers. Learnscapes : where informal learning and knowledge work converge. Learning is the process of figuring out how the world works. It’s a dog’s breakfast of acquiring skills, information, knowledge, savoir faire, and more.
