A development ratio is a measure that reflects the amount of time required to develop an eLearning course. So, I’d roughly (and generously) estimate that the ratio is around 80:20 for content: practice. And, yes, this is a tradeoff: how do we find a balance that both yields the outcomes we need but doesn’t blow out the budget? The point is that I think our ratio should really be 50:50 if not 20:80 for content:practice.

While ideally, we’d have a ratio closer to 80/20 for practice versus content, in many cases the budget expectations are for that ratio to be reversed. Similarly, while we should budget in time for several tests and refinements, we might have to settle for one cycle of revision.

I took it (and no blame to him if I misconstrue) to be an issue of should we match our budgets to that ration. Donald Clark raises an issue on his blog about confounding informal with Web 2.0, and the point I found interesting is his query about the 80/20 in/formal learning metrics.Â
